NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Former representative for New York's 3rd congressional district George Santos is facing people's wrath online as federal prosecutors demanded a judge to throw away his appeal to drop some of the charges against him as his trial nears.

The 35-year-old politician has been slapped with a total of 23 charges, including availing unemployment benefits despite being employed, defrauding campaign donors, lying to Congress about his wealth, and using donors’ money to buy designer clothes, as reported by the Associated Press.

George Santos’ lawyers want to drop a few charges

In October last year, he pled not guilty to amended charges. However, in May 2024, his legal team requested the court to dismiss three charges against him out of the 23.

The attorneys reportedly asserted, “All of the credit cards were voluntarily sent to Santos’ campaign and his campaign was authorized to charge the cards for a specified amount.”

Prosecutors accuse George Santos of ‘abusing’ credit card information

But on Friday, May 31, federal prosecutors submitted their argument, stating, “Santos did not merely ‘use’ credit card information that he properly possessed; he abused it, with specific intent to defraud, to increase the amount of money he had appeared to raise as a candidate for the House.”

“Nor did he merely ‘use’ names in entering fraudulent charges on his victims’ credit cards; he misused them deceitfully, with specific intent to mask, conceal, and prolong his unlawful activities,” they added.

Meanwhile, Santos faced heavy criticism online as a critic of him reportedly commented below an article, “Just because someone voluntarily gives you their credit card info, that doesn’t give you the green light to do anything with it other than what the cardholder intended.”

Another critic wrote, “Nope, should add more fraud charges.”

The third one said, “The fraud wants to drop fraud charges. Once a fraud, always a fraud. Just like Trump.”

“If any elected official has any self-respect or pride in their profession they should make sure Santos and Menendez get the book thrown at them. The barrel is starting to look like all bad apples!” the fourth one stated.

“I completely forgot about George Santos. Do you think he and Trump might end up being cellmates?” the fifth one remarked.

An individual shared, “NONE of the fraud charges should be dropped! He committed fraud! He needs to be charged with fraud, and he needs to be found GUILTY of fraud.”

The second one added, “Why do these trials take so long? That crook should have been in jail a long time ago. 👎 Put him in a cell next to don the cheater.”
