'That's low': Internet ridicules Joe Biden for raising only $28M in his star-studded LA fundraiser
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: President Joe Biden arrived in Los Angeles this morning for a fundraising event alongside former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, comedian Jimmy Kimmel, and actors George Clooney and Julia Roberts. He was on his way back from the G7 summit in Italy.
According to the Biden campaign, the event has already raised $28 million, making it the largest Democratic fundraiser in history, The Hill reported.
Joe Biden is set to attend the fundraiser at the Peacock Theatre, LA
Biden is scheduled to arrive at the Peacock Theatre on Saturday night, June 15, for the fundraiser hosted by Clooney and Roberts. He will travel through nine time zones and make a quick stop in Washington, DC for fuel.
After working to fortify the Western coalition supporting Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia at the G7 summit of the world's wealthiest democracies, he will now turn his attention elsewhere.
Joe Biden's spokesperson said enthusiasm for Biden-Harris 'couldn’t be stronger'
“This Saturday we are going to see an unprecedented and record setting turn out from the media and entertainment world,” a Biden spokesperson wrote to the outlet. “The enthusiasm and commitment for Biden/Harris couldn’t be stronger. We all understand this is the most important election of our lifetime.”
Although the cost of seats for the fundraiser ranged from $250 to $500,000, Kimmel, Roberts, and Clooney all texted their supporters to raise money, requesting that they contribute $20 to watch the fundraiser online.
Joe Biden, Barack Obama, George Clooney, and Julia Roberts are up for an interview with Jimmy Kimmel
Biden, Obama, Roberts, and Clooney will have a moderated interview with Kimmel during the fundraiser, with a likely healthcare theme. After undergoing open heart surgery for his newborn son in 2017, Kimmel has been a vocal supporter of the Affordable Care Act for a long time.
“It’s Jimmy Kimmel. I’m interviewing President Biden and President Barack Obama — with special guests George Clooney, Julia Roberts, and more — and you’re invited,” Kimmel wrote in a fundraising text. “Trump will hate this, so let’s do it!”
Other stars who'll attend Joe Biden's fundraiser event
Keegan-Michael Key, Mandana Dayani, Connie Britton, Misha Collins, Jeri Ryan, Jonathan Del Arco, Blake Cooper Griffin, and Adam Met will also attend the event, according to the Biden campaign.
Biden hosted a similar fundraiser in March at Radio City Music Hall in New York, where Stephen Colbert, a late-night host, interviewed Biden, Obama, and Clinton. The event raised $26 million.
Donald Trump has outsmarted Joe Biden in the fundraising campaign
Although Biden had an early advantage in fundraising, former President Donald Trump has stepped up to the plate and surpassed Biden's April event in New York with a $50.5 million fundraiser in Florida.
In May, Trump also raised $141 million, the majority of which came from his campaign following his conviction in New York.
Biden is skipping a Global Peace Summit for Ukraine in Switzerland to attend the fundraiser, where Vice President Kamala Harris is slated to go instead. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his displeasure with Biden’s proposed action, calling it “not a strong decision.”
Zelensky predicted last month that Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, would most likely "stand and applaud" Biden's absence. Russia and Putin are not permitted to attend the summit.
Internet slams Joe Biden for garnering only $28M in the star-studded fundraising event
Netizens mocked the POTUS for only being able to collect $28 million in the fundraising event despite the presence of multiple celebrities.
One X user tweeted, "Only $28M? Thats low compared to what trump pulled." "Rich Elites Are Out Of Touch With America," said another. "Biden is so bad he needs celebrity support," added one user.
"Trump raised $500M since his trial," reminded one while another commented, "Can’t wait for Biden’s bloopers."
"Not to brag, but everyday people donated over $100 million to Trump within 24 hours," another chimed in.
