NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Former President Donald Trump opened up about his plans to tackle illegal immigration in an interview published in TIME Magazine on Tuesday, April 30.

The presumptive GOP nominee for the 2024 presidential election said that he planned to use the military to expel illegal immigrants if he wins a second term at the White House.

Trump's strategy against illegal immigration

Trump told TIME that he mostly wanted to use the National Guard to remove illegal immigrants, adding, "If they weren’t able to, then I’d use (other branches of) the military."

When asked about the Posse Comitatus Act, which prevents the government from using the military to execute the law or act as a police force, he replied that the migrants "aren’t civilians" and that "these are people that aren’t legally in our country".

The business tycoon further considered calling on the support of local police to help handle migrants, warning to pull back on local government funding for non-compliance with his policies.

"There’s a possibility that some won’t want to participate, and they won’t partake in the riches," he said.

The interview also mentions Trump's intention to reinstate the Remain in Mexico program, which required migrants to return to Mexico until their immigration hearings, as well as Title 42, a Covid-era policy that allowed border officials to turn away migrants due to health concerns.

Resuming the construction of the border wall and launcing a widespread deportation effort were also brought up during the discussion.

An Axios/The Harris Poll survey published on April 25 found that nearly two-thirds of Americans believe illegal immigration to be a real crisis and not a media narrative, reported Fox News.

Internet reacts to Trump's comments

Readers of the story on Fox News were supportive of Trump's stance, as the following comments on the website demonstrate.

"Trump is a leader who is transparent in his policies and delivers what he promises. This is as solid of a plan to secure our borders and expel people who have no legal right to be in this country," wrote a reader.

"It's a foreign invasion. Makes sense to treat it as such," stated another.

"Outstanding solution. Simple, appropriate and effective. How come President Trump is the only one who comes up with these options?" commented a third.

"That’s my Trump. He’s the back bone this country needs," opinionate one on X.

"Absolutely. It is a war against the American citizenry!" tweeted another.
