WASHINGTON, DC: Key Democratic senators Dick Durbin and Sheldon Whitehouse, both members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, have expressed their desire to meet with Chief Justice John Roberts.

The meeting is sought in light of recent reports about controversial flags displayed at Justice Samuel Alito’s residences.

The senators called for this meeting “as soon as possible” to discuss what they term the Supreme Court’s “ethics crisis.”

They have urged Chief Justice Roberts to ensure that Justice Alito recuses himself from all cases related to the efforts to overturn the 2020 election and the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.

"We also renew our call for the Supreme Court to adopt an enforceable code of conduct for Justices," the senators added in a letter released Friday, 24 May, as reported by The Hill.

They have requested a meeting with Chief Justice Roberts.

"We request a meeting with you as soon as possible, in your capacity as Chief Justice and as presiding officer of the Judicial Conference of the United States, to discuss additional steps to address the Supreme Court’s ethics crisis," they penned in the letter.

Controversial flags at Justice Samuel Alito’s homes have sparked a backlash

The request for a meeting comes in the wake of a report by The New York Times last week that an inverted US flag, associated with the 'Stop the Steal' movement, was flown at Alito’s Alexandria, home.

This revelation led to a backlash from many Democrats in Congress and even some Republicans. The Times also reported that Alito’s beach house flew an “Appeal to Heaven” flag — a flag adopted by January 6 protesters, although it was designed during the Revolutionary War.

Following the first report, Senator Durbin had called on Alito to recuse himself from all January 6 related cases. After the latest report from the Times, Democrats in the Senate have said the nation’s highest court is “out of control” and is pushing a “partisan” agenda.

Internet reacts to Sen Dick Durbin and Sen Sheldon Whitehouse's likely meeting with Chief Justice John Roberts

Meanwhile, the Internet has reacted to key democrats seeking a meeting with Chief Justice Roberts.

"Robert’s should reply with a simple, 'No,' wrote one user on X. “Co-Equal Branch of Government. They should stay in their lanes. Professional Politicians are far from ethical!” wrote another.

“There is no controversy. It’s democrats doing what they do best, whine,” wrote a third.

"Flags are symbols and 100% protected by the First Amendment. They reflect opinions. All justices have opinions, and most of them are obvious. Shall we investigate people who fly the Ukraine flag, or the Palestinian flag, or just the ones Democrats don’t like?’ penned one.

“Democrat Senators should figure out something better to do with their time. Plenty of things need their attention,” wrote another user.

“Alito or his wife can fly whatever flag they want. This is a free country. @SenatorDurbin is an anti-American turd,” wrote another.

“Chief Justice Roberts needs to tell them to Fvck off and quit trying to intimidate the third branch of our government," wrote one more.
