Mike Turner slammed as he differs with Trump's anti-immigrant rhetoric but claims ex-prez can fix border
WASHINGTON, DC: Top House Republican Rep Mike Turner expressed his disagreement with former President Donald Trump's recent anti-immigrant remarks but asserted only Trump could resolve the border crisis, reported ABC News.
In an appearance on ABC News' This Week' on Sunday, March 17, co-anchor Martha Raddatz pressed the House Intelligence Committee chair about Trump labeling some migrants "not people" and "animals."
"I've disagreed with those in the past, and I think the American people disagree with those. But I do think that people see that Donald Trump is the only candidate in this race that's going to be able to fix this crisis," Turner responded.
In an Ohio rally on March 16, the GOP presumptive nominee said, "We have people coming into the country, or trying to come in — we're stopping a lot of them. You wouldn't believe how bad these people are. These aren't people, these are animals, and we're taking them out of the country at a level and at a rate that's never happened before."
But definitely not lying about calling immigrants “not people” and “animals” in his effort to dehumanize them. Plays quite well for the racist base tho. pic.twitter.com/ZqoTssCFSg

Trump has previously accused illegal immigrants entering the US through its southern border of "poisoning the blood of our country."
Mike Turner blames Biden for border crisis
The Ohio lawmaker argued President Joe Biden's immigration policies were responsible for the worsening crisis at the border, which has witnessed record-high migrant crossings ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
"When you talk about what's happening at the border, this is absolutely a crisis that's created by this administration," Turner claimed, citing the FBI's warnings about "dangerous" people crossing the border into the US.
According to the Pew Research Center, in December 2023 alone, the Border Patrol agents had around 25,000 migrant encounters at the US-Mexico border.
Moreover, the migrants and border crisis has taken center stage in the Trump-Biden rematch in November. The worsening situation at the southern border is among the top ace cards of Trump's campaign to prevent the incumbent from a second term in the White House.
Mike Turner disagrees with Trump's 'hostages' remark
Trump's Ohio rally made headlines for his shocking action when he saluted convicted January 6 rioters whom he referred to as "hostages."
Turner, who was not present at the event conducted at his home district, where Trump campaigned for Senate Canditate Bernie Moreno, disagreed with labeling the imprisoned Capitol attackers as "hostages."

He's taken a political party and transformed it into a cult of political violence & chaos. The only way to stop the madness is to vote against him in Nov. pic.twitter.com/EaFR2RfkYB
Despite pointing out that some court actions in relation to the Capitol attack were "overturned," the Ohio Congressman said, "I believe in our judicial system."
"You would think, of course, that Donald Trump would have very strong emotional feelings about the individuals who have been in jail and gone to prison over these," Turner added.
Regarding the former president's campaign rhetoric, the lawmaker said, "I think, certainly, there are statements that he makes that many Americans would not agree with, and many Americans would agree with it."
Trump, who continues to claim the 2020 election was rigged, recently promised to consider the release of imprisoned January 6 "hostages" as a day one priority if he wins in November.
Internet slams Mike Turner
Outraged at his claim of Trump being capable of resolving the border crisis, netizens lashed out at Turner, reminding him about the failed bipartisan border bill the Republican Senators thwarted.
One user called the lawmaker "Pathetic!"
"Shut up Mike. Think about your country. Have some self respect," another outraged person wrote.

about your country.
Have some self respect.
A third remarked, "'Only Trump can fix it' is authoritarian rhetoric. It’s the job of Congress to fix it. The Republicans have abdicated that responsibility so they can use it as a political cudgel."

It’s the job of Congress to fix it. The Republicans have abdicated that responsibility so they can use it as a political cudgel.
"Rep Turner should take his chance to address the crisis by forcing a vote on the immigration bill crafted in a bipartisan fashion (i.e. Dems gave in to most everything) in the Senate. No, trump is not the only one who can fix it-congress is," a fourth response read.
