Internet calls Biden administration’s move to reclassify marijuana as less dangerous drug a ‘desperate attempt to stay in office’

WASHINGTON, DC: The Joe Biden administration has come in for much criticism online after news broke that they were looking into reclassifying marijuana as a less risky substance and a safer alternative to harder drugs.

Adding fuel to the fire, the administration also faced a barrage of trolling following reports that high-ranking officials are considering the possibility of granting entry to a select group of Palestinians into the United States, who are fleeing the violence of the current Israel-Hamas conflict.

Biden administration set to reclassify marijuana as less dangerous drug

According to Fox News, the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) made an announcement on Tuesday, April 30, confirming its plan to reclassify marijuana to a less severe category.

This move, which come during an election year, could potentially acknowledge the medical benefits of cannabis and its lower risk compared to more harmful drugs.

However, it's essential to note that this proposal does not mean an outright legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes, as clarified by Fox News.

A spokesperson from the Biden administration informed Fox News, "Attorney General Garland is submitting a new rule to OMB as soon as today which would reclassify marijuana."

If successful, this rule change would remove marijuana from the restrictive Schedule I category.

As reported by Fox News, Xochitl Hinojosa, the Director of Public Affairs at the Department of Justice (DOJ), stated, "Today, the Attorney General circulated a proposal to reclassify marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III. Once published by the Federal Register, it will initiate a formal rulemaking process as prescribed by Congress in the Controlled Substances Act."
