NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Hillary Clinton refused to offer her support to an embattled President Joe Biden, saying mutinous Democrats forcing him to step down from the race was like "taking away grandpa's keys," reported the New York Post, citing sources.

The former presidential candidate purportedly made the mocking remarks at a private salon in New York City on Wednesday, July 10, at the home of venture capital executive Jacqueline Novogratz. Influential Democrats who want the president to exit the re-election bid were among the attendees.

According to an insider who disclosed the conversation to Page Six, Clinton "made a joke [saying] anyone has been in the situation where you have to take the keys away from older parents."

The source added that the former first lady advised the crowd that "you can't force" Biden out and "the only people who could persuade Biden [to exit] are the people closest to him." Meanwhile, another source said Clinton noted "it was going to be very hard to convince" the octogenarian to step down.

Hillary Clinton reportedly confident Joe Biden would win against Donald Trump

Amidst more Democratic elected officials calling on Biden to reconsider his decision to stay in the race, Clinton, who lost the presidential election to Donald Trump in 2016, was confident the sitting president would defeat the Republican in November, according to sources.

The former secretary of state reportedly told the audience that she "certainly" believes Biden would emerge victorious against Trump in November. However, she advised any potential replacement to avoid the nomination with a "10-foot pole."

"Hillary told the crowd, 'Why would you do that when you could have a clear shot to run your own campaign in 2028?'" a source said, adding Clinton mulled, "Maybe somebody will prove [her] wrong in the next two weeks."

Guests at the private salon reportedly included billionaire Jonathan Soros, actress Meg Ryan, BS Global Asset Management CEO Margo Alexander, and Iceland President-elect Halla Tomasdottir.

Biden has defied all calls to suspend his campaign, which intensified after last month's disastrous debate. He reiterated his decision to continue at a press conference following the NATO Summit in Washington DC on July 11, claiming no polls suggested he could not win against Trump in November.

Internet divided as Hillary Clinton likens forcing Biden out to 'taking the keys away from older parents'

Netizens responded with varying opinions to Clinton's purported remark, comparing forcing Biden's exit to "taking the keys away from older parents." While some found the comment "condescending," another group agreed it was time for the president to step aside.

"Ugh. It sounds condescending coming from her," a user said. While another remarked, "He lost the keys a long time ago. Scary thing is we have NO idea who has the keys now."

"Well, if she knows one thing, it’s losing presidential elections," quipped a third user. Whereas a fourth response read, "Correct I had to do that. My mom’s dementia was bad. I was afraid for other peoples lives that she might hurt them.. when you get to a certain age and if you have dementia, you cannot drive anymore. Biden cannot be the president anymore. He is sick. Take his keys away from him."

"HRC is going to take the Obama approach: publicly support Joe but privately approve & assist the efforts to remove him," someone else chimed in. On the other hand, an individual wrote, "Hillary and the rest of the Democrat leadership knew he was suffering from dementia but chose to let everything ride to win big in 2024."
