The house explosion incident, described as "catastrophic", not only claimed Brown's life but also resulted in injuries to 11 of his fellow first responders and two civilians, according to a statement from Loudoun County Fire and Rescue.
Upon receiving a 911 call about a gassy smell from a resident, the crew reached the house on Friday night.
They reportedly found a 500-gallon propane tank buried underground and detected a leak on the side of the house.
"A short time later, units on scene reported a catastrophic explosion concurrent with multiple maydays from firefighters inside the residence," Loudoun County Fire and Rescue stated.
"Upon receiving the multiple maydays and calls for help, fire and rescue crews worked to locate and rescue the trapped members from the debris that covered them."
Additional responders from Loudoun and Fairfax counties were swiftly brought in for support.
As a result, 11 first responders, who suffered injuries of varying severity, and two civilians with non-life-threatening injuries were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
As of Saturday morning, four individuals remained in the hospital, according to the statement.
Brown, a member of the Sterling Volunteer Fire Company, reportedly had been serving the Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System since 2016.
"Please keep Firefighter Brown's family, friends and colleagues in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time, and we ask that the familyβs privacy be respected," LCFR added.
The local fire marshal's office is persistently probing into the source and reason behind the explosion. They have reassured the local residents that this incident is considered to be isolated, with no continuing threat to the community.
