LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Irish actor Cillian Murphy has made a mark as a talented performer on screens both big and small. But his hilarious yet heartfelt reaction to winning the 2023 Golden Globe for Best Actor on Sunday night, January 7, has cemented his status as an Internet darling and “real lover boy” in the eyes of fans.

After Murphy’s wife left a lipstick mark on his nose with an impromptu congratulatory kiss, the actor’s decision to keep the scarlet smudge for his acceptance speech highlighted his trademark humor and humility even in a career-defining moment of glory, per Daily Mail.

The 'Peaky Blinders' star took home the award for his portrayal of J Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who helped develop the atomic bomb, in Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer.'

Just seconds after Murphy's name was announced for the coveted honor, his wife of nearly 20 years, Yvonne McGuinness, grabbed his face and planted a firm kiss on his lips to congratulate him. This accidentally left a noticeable lipstick mark on the actor's nose.

After a brief attempt to wipe off the scarlet smudge, Murphy playfully embraced it, asking the star-studded Golden Globes audience, "First question, do I have lipstick all over my nose? I was gonna leave it." His self-deprecating humor and evident affection for his wife charmed both the crowd and viewers at home.

Cillian Murphy's witty acceptance speech

In his witty acceptance speech, Murphy was quick to credit director Nolan for the film's success. "I knew the first time I walked on a Christopher Nolan set that it was different," he remarked.

"I could tell by the level of rigor, the level of focus, the level of dedication, the complete lack of any seating options for actors that I was in the hands of the visionary director and master."

Nolan took home the Golden Globe for Best Director for his work on 'Oppenheimer'. The film also nabbed awards for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Original Score, and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr’s performance.

Along with praising Nolan, Murphy made sure to highlight his exceptional castmates like Emily Blunt, Downey Jr, Matt Damon, and Gary Oldman. "One of the most beautiful and vulnerable things about being an actor is that you can’t do it on your own, really," he noted.

"We had the most incredible ensemble cast in this movie. It was magic and some of them are here today. Thank you for carrying me and holding me through this movie."
