LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK: Rep Tom Suozzi, a Long Island Democrat, has emerged victorious in a closely-watched race to fill the seat of expelled Republican congressman George Santos in New York's 3rd Congressional District.

Suozzi, aged 61, defeated Republican candidate Mazi Pilip, who conceded the race on Tuesday night after the Associated Press announced Suozzi's victory with 52% of the votes counted in Queens and Long Island.

"We will continue to fight," Pilip assured supporters in East Meadow. "We will bring common-sense government, I promise you."

Suozzi's victory reduces the GOP control in the House to just six seats, according to the New York Post.

In his victory speech to supporters, Suozzi stated, “We won this campaign because of the people of Queens and Long Island.”

As he took aim at former president Donald Trump and his supporters, he claimed that voters were tired of political squabbling.

“Stop running around for Trump and start running the country,” he remarked. “It’s time to find common ground.”

How did Suozzi win back the closely contested seat?

During the course of the election campaign, Suozzi, a seasoned politician who had previously represented a significant portion of the current district for six years, engaged in a series of contentious debates with his rival, Pilip, on the topics of abortion and border security.

In a last-minute attempt to discredit his opponent, the politician likened Pilip to "George Santos 2.0."

At a Sunday ‘get out the vote’ rally in Plainview, he courted supporters by saying, "I'm sick and tired of what's happening in Washington, DC."

Throughout his campaign, Suozzi deftly balanced positioning himself as a loyal Democrat while also keeping his party's image somewhat at a distance.

This was especially important given that the district is both wealthy and conservative, and that George Santos, a Republican, won by a solid 8-point margin in 2022.

Suozzi secured a significant victory in the Queens portion of the district with approximately 62% of the votes before he earned enough votes in Nassau County to claim the seat.

Rep Suozzi (D-NY) was first elected to the House in 2016 and won his reelection in 2020.

However, in 2022, he surrendered his seat in order to launch a failed primary bid for Governor against Kathy Hochul.

Prior to his stint in Congress, Suozzi held the position of Mayor of Glen Cove from 1994 to 2001 and was Nassau County's elected executive from 2002 to 2009.

Internet trolls Santos after Suozzi's victory in his seat

People on X hailed Tom Suozzi while mocking George Santos, whose expulsion from the House of Representatives last year prompted the special election for his vacant seat.

One X user remarked, "Byeeeeee Santos! Thank you, New York!!!!"

Another said, "Indeed, Tom Suozzi's win signals a desire for a shift towards more moderate and transparent politics, moving away from polarisation and scandal. It could mark a pivotal point in New York's political landscape, setting a precedent for future elections."

Someone else wrote, "Congratulations to Tom Suozzi on the victory in #NY03! This outcome reflects a desire for a different direction. Let's move forward together, prioritizing unity and common ground for a stronger America."

One user quipped, "Go MAGA win NADA."

Another claimed, "This is just the beginning of voters expressing how they feel about the current Republican Party. November is coming."

A user tweeted, "Keep in mind this is a very conservative district! Well played, New York!"
