PHOENIX, ARIZONA: President Biden made headlines on Tuesday, March 19, during a campaign event in Phoenix, where he veered off-script in an unexpected manner.

The 81-year-old president, known for his affinity for interacting with children, left the stage abruptly and headed straight for a baby in the audience, much to the surprise of his supporters.

Eyebrow Raising Moment

"Well, folks, I have to tell you straight up," Biden remarked upon returning to the stage, "I like you all, but I couldn’t resist that little baby."

According to the New York Post, the president's impromptu departure occurred just a minute into the opening remarks of Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodríguez, granddaughter of labor icon Cesar Chávez.

Throughout Rodríguez's speech and the subsequent speaker's address, President Biden remained seated beside the mother holding the infant, engaging in conversation with both mother and child. "How old?" Biden was overheard asking the mother as he interacted with them during his introduction.

Biden's fondness for babies is well-documented, with the president previously declaring he likes “babies better than people.”

Social Media Reactions

However, his behavior has garnered criticism on social media platforms, with some users labeling it as "creepy" and expressing concern over the baby's reaction Tuesday.

"Soooooo creepy," one posted on X.

"That baby's reaction says it all. Poor baby," another chimed in.

"He could smell that baby from Air Force One," someone else quipped.

"Please god let this be over already," a comment read.

"It's not funny anymore," another offered.

Tuesday's event at a Phoenix Mexican restaurant marked the beginning of the Biden campaign's outreach efforts to Hispanic voters, a demographic where the president is facing challenges.

Trump's Popularity Among Hispanics

Recent polls indicate that former President Donald Trump leads Biden among Hispanic voters, with some attributing Trump's popularity to his entertaining persona.

Arizona Democratic Party chairwoman Yolanda Bejarano suggested that Trump's ability to entertain crowds contributes to his appeal among Hispanics.

“People like to be entertained and sometimes Donald Trump, what he does, it provides that entertainment,” she told reporters.

“People like laugh at his rallies, you know, it’s like they’re going to a circus. They’re listening to him just joke about things — very, very serious things and we just need to be very, very focused and you know, make sure that Latinos understand exactly who Donald Trump is and what a danger he presents to us.”

Despite Biden's victory over Trump in Arizona during the 2020 election, the former president currently holds a lead in the state, according to polling averages.

Biden's campaign aims to differentiate him from Trump by focusing not only on issues like abortion and the economy but also on immigration and border policies. A memo from Biden's campaign manager highlights immigration as a key area to contrast the president's approach with that of his predecessor.

In a Univision Radio interview, Biden criticized Trump's alleged derogatory remarks about migrants and blamed him for obstructing legislation aimed at addressing border issues.

“He says immigrants are ‘poisoning the blood’ of this country, separated children from parents at the border, caged the kids, planned mass deportations systems,” Biden said. “We have to stop this guy. We can’t let this happen. We are a nation of immigrants.”

While Biden has adopted a more conservative stance on immigration language recently, he reaffirmed his commitment to providing undocumented immigrants with a pathway to citizenship, the New York Times reported.

Responding to Biden's remarks, Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt accused the president of prioritizing illegal immigrants over American citizens.

“President Trump will secure the southern border and deport illegal criminals to protect ALL American citizens,” Leavitt said in a statement.
