MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: Donald Trump posted a bond of $91.6 million on Friday, March 8, alongside a notice to appeal the $83.3 million penalty verdict in the defamation case brought by writer E Jean Carroll to the US Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit, as per The New York Times.

The ex-POTUS faced a March 11 deadline to post the bond or pay the fine after Judge Lewis Kaplan denied his request to delay the penalty enforcement. As of now, the plaintiff's attorney has time till Monday, March 11, to raise objections to the bond.

According to court filings, the former president signed the bond agreement on March 5, and the lawyer for FIC signed it on March 6, the same day Trump's attorney requested a delay.

Carroll, a long-time advice columnist, was awarded $83.3 million in late January over defamation damages for Trump denying her sexual assault allegations.

Who provided the bond amount to Donald Trump?

Federal Insurance Company, a subsidiary of Chubb Insurance Company, offered the $91 million bond to Trump.

According to its website, Chubb describes itself as the "world leader in insurance" and operates in 54 nations and territories. It offers services including "commercial and personal property and casualty insurance, personal accident and supplemental health insurance, reinsurance, and life insurance to a diverse group of clients."

"These bonds are an ordinary and important part of the American justice system, protecting the rights of both defendants and plaintiffs," stated Chubb about Trump's bond without commenting on "client-specific" details.

The terms of the bond have still not been publicly disclosed. Furthermore, Carroll cannot collect the judgment as the bond prevails while Trump appeals the verdict.

In a court filing on Friday, the ex-president's lawyer, Alina Habba, asked Judge Kaplan to approve the bond as "adequate and sufficient" to prevent the plaintiff from collecting the penalty until the appeal is finalized.

Carroll called the bond a "stupendous amount," writing on Substack.

She added, "Though the illustrious Robbie Kaplan is strong enough to yank a golden toilet out of the floor at Trump Tower and toss it through the window, this bond saves Robbie the trouble of showing up with US marshals on Monday to do so."

On the other hand, Trump's attorney, Habba, pointed out "numerous prejudicial errors" and expressed strong confidence in the appeal court overturning the "egregious judgment."

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung also confirmed a full amount of bond has been filed in the "baseless judgment in the Democrat-funded Carroll Witch Hunt, which is being appealed and litigated."

Internet ridicules Donald Trump after he posted the $91.6 million bond

Trump faced intense online mockery for filing the $91 million bond covered by an outside insurance company.

One said, "Just don’t cash that check," while another remarked, "Now he can't afford to eat at McDonald's."

"Now hopefully Alina Habba handles the appeal process. She could get it up to $150 million," stated a person, referring to Trump's attorney.

Someone else quipped, "I hope they took Mar-a-Lardo as collateral," and one more added, Bonding company ain’t never gonna see that money," referring to the insurance company that covered the amount.
