Donald Trump mocked as he asks judge to delay enforcing $83.3M E Jean Carroll defamation case verdict
MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: Donald Trump's lawyers recently asked New York Judge Lewis Kaplan to delay the ruling requiring him to pay $83.3 million to writer E Jean Carroll over defamation charges.
In a court filing on Friday, February 23, the GOP frontrunner's legal team requested the judge to grant a 30-day delay in enforcing the verdict. The proposed delay is to await Trump's post-trial motions, which are due by March 7, or alternatively, suggested allowing the ex-POTUS to post a bond covering "an appropriate fraction" of the total damages, as per The Hill.
The motion argued that a "stay is warranted where the size of the bond, if any, remains uncertain because post-trial motions are very likely to affect the amount of the judgment," adding, "there is a strong probability that the disposition of post-trial motions will substantially reduce, if not eliminate, the amount of the judgment."
In late January, Trump was ordered to pay $83.3 million for defaming Carroll in 2019 when he constantly denied her sexual assault accusations.
Donald Trump's attorney Alina Habba calls the $83.3M fine 'egregiously excessive'
In a statement to The Hill on Friday, Trump's attorney, Alina Habba, claimed, "The figure awarded to Ms Carroll is egregiously excessive. The Court must exercise its authority to prevent Ms Carroll's from enforcing this absurd judgment, which will not withstand appeal."
The ex-POTUS' request to postpone the penalty comes after he was hit with another massive fine in the New York civil fraud case. Judge Arthur Engoron, on February 16, penalized the White House hopeful with $355 million for illegally inflating the price of his properties in the Empire State for decades to secure profitable bank loans.
Trump's legal team made a similar request to postpone the enforcement in the New York civil fraud case for a month, which was denied by Judge Engoron, according to ABC News.
The presidential hopeful's total penalties are expected to cross $500 million along with the interest calculated.
He has frequently denied any wrongdoings against Carroll. For instance, in a recent Michigan rally, the GOP frontrunner disparaged the longtime advice columnist, saying, "How about the one two weeks ago? A woman, I'm saying, 'Who the hell is she? Who is the woman?' It's so unfair what's happening in our country. Our court system is a mess."

Internet trolls Donald Trump as he asks judge to delay enforcing $83.3 million verdict in E Jean Carroll case
Weighing in on Trump's request to delay the $83.3 million penalty verdict, netizens took to ridicule the POTUS for his legal moves.
One wrote, "He's broke," and another added, "doesn't sound like he's sitting on much cash."
"This was a jury award. Pay up," demanded a person.
Someone else said, "Oh … Oh … Trump and appeals .. he must be running out of money … but he can just tell the republicans to pay his losses … the republicans will just get back on the phones and beg for money for their want-to-be KING!!! The Silent Majority!!"
An individual mocked, "Aww someone who claims to be a billionaire doesn’t have it," and one more quipped, "MAGA, quick, give him more of your money."
