NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: On the evening of the star-studded Met Gala, NYPD clashed with more than 1,000 pro-Palestine protesters on the street just blocks away from the event, reported the Daily Mail.

According to the publication, police could take swift action as they were bracing for a possible demonstration at the highly publicized event.

Many of the protesters were arrested along Madison Avenue to prevent the march from spilling over to the neighboring Fifth Avenue where the Gala is held. However, the initial success of diverting the bulk of protesters down Park Avenue did not last long, as barriers were soon smashed and the march spilled over to the Fifth.

'Day of Rage For Gaza'

Officially named as the 'Day Of Rage For Gaza: From The Encampments To The Streets,' Monday afternoon saw two protest marches begin at Columbia University and NYU downtown and merge close to the Met Gala. Participants were seen holding placards, banging drums, waving flags, as well as setting off red and green flares and smoke - the colors of the Palestinian flag - all the while chanting, "Free Palestine!"

The march moved along Park Avenue, blocking the southbound lanes, after the initial face-off with NYPD. Uniformed officers walked along the streets armed with zip ties to detain protesters causing a disruption.

A clip shared on the social media platform X showed the police deployment to tackle protesters, with the account sharing in the post, "Over 1,000 pro-Palestine protesters are attempting to disrupt the Met Gala in New York City. The group reportedly met at Hunter College and then marched towards the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The NYPD initially intercepted the group however protesters are trying to evade the police and get to the event ... Police have reportedly declared a level 3 mobilization."

Internet reacts to protesters marching toward Met Gala

As soon as clip of the protest march gained traction online, social media users put forward their views.

"Hilarious. Elite leftists like to support these little street thugs, let them enjoy the consequences," posted a user on X reacting to the news.

"Never ever watched it before but this might be worth watching," quipped another.

"Looks like the Met Gala is getting more action than usual—definitely not the kind of red carpet drama they planned for!" expressed a third.

"Going to see the people that fund them. How nice," jibed a fourth.

"Why won’t all the Hollywood elite let these protestors join them? Don’t they support the cause?" inquired a fifth.
