NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: In a stunning display of public relations failure, Eric Trump's attempted defense of his father Donald Trump's criminal trial has backfired spectacularly.

The younger Trump's comments on Fox News contained a critical factual error that directly contradicted the charges against the former president, according to the HuffPost.

This blunder has unleashed a torrent of online mockery, with social media users ridiculing Eric's seemingly clueless attempt to defend his father.

Eric Trump's gaffe while defending father Donald in interview

During a recent interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Eric Trump expressed his dismay at witnessing his father Donald walk into the courtroom for the highly publicized trial.

He accused the Democrats of relentlessly pursuing his father's downfall and said, "Every time I watch my father walk into that courtroom it breaks my heart because [the Democrats] will stop at nothing […] to take the man down and no one believes this nonsense, right?"

Eric then made a crucial mistake that undermined his defense. He stated, "My father was focused on running the United States of America, not bookkeeping, not that anything was done wrong in the bookkeeping."

However, the charges against Donald Trump stem from alleged falsification of business records to conceal hush money payments made to actress Stormy Daniels before he assumed the presidency in 2016.

Eric's disastrous error is just the latest in a series of controversial defenses from the Trump family. In the same interview with Hannity, Eric also complained about his father being brought to trial so close to the 2024 election, suggesting without evidence that it was due to his popularity in polls.

Additionally, Eric made headlines in March when he revealed the ordeal of securing a $464 million bond in a civil fraud trial, claiming that dozens of sureties laughed at his request for a "half-billion dollar bond." However, New York state lawyers eventually accepted a $175 million bond from Donald Trump, the Rolling Stone reported.

Internet mocks Eric Trump for making glaring error in interview

Eric Trump's glaring error did not go unnoticed by the internet, with social media users wasting no time to mock him. One X user remarked, "They just keep digging the hole bigger," while another chuckled, "Hahahahhaha. None of them can keep their stories straight."

One person said, "Yeah, he wasn't running the country when he made those payments. Nice try, forgotten son." Another user commented, "Keep trying Eric but daddy still will not love you just because you go on TV to look ridiculous for him."

Another observer questioned, "Does little Eric know exactly why the Donald is on trial now? Or does he think bookkeeping is not throwing away any books?" One user tweeted, "Eric to the rescue. Like handing a drowning man an anchor."

Another user commented, "It takes effort to be 'the dumb one' in that family."

One individual wrote, "It’s a race in that family to the bottom of stupid (except Vanky) but Eric manages to repeatedly win."
