PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA: During an event on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, President Joe Biden twice claimed that his uncle Ambrose Finnegan was eaten by cannibals in New Guinea after his plane crashed during World War II.

However, official military records indicate that the aircraft crashed into the Pacific Ocean, the New York Post reported.

Initially, the commander-in-chief told reporters after visiting a war memorial in Scranton that bears his uncle’s name, “He got shot down in an area where there were a lot of cannibals at the time.”

The 81-year-old incumbent POTUS added, “They never recovered his body, but the government went back when I went down there and they checked and found some parts of the plane.”

What did Joe Biden say about his uncle during his Pennsylvania visit?

The President of the United States reportedly repeated the incorrect narrative about his uncle being eaten by cannibals after traveling to Pittsburgh to give a speech regarding steel tariffs.

Biden told United Steelworkers union members, “He got shot down in New Guinea and they never found the body because there used to be — there were a lot of cannibals, for real, in that part of New Guinea.”

According to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency at the Pentagon, Finnegan's aircraft was lost in the open sea on May 14, 1944.

“For unknown reasons, this plane was forced to ditch in the ocean off the north coast of New Guinea. Both engines failed at low altitude, and the aircraft’s nose hit the water hard,” the military’s record shows.

“Three men failed to emerge from the sinking wreck and were lost in the crash. One crew member survived and was rescued by a passing barge. An aerial search the next day found no trace of the missing aircraft or the lost crew members,” it said.

During his speech, President Joe Biden recounted his uncle’s story while criticizing former president Donald Trump for allegedly failing to visit a military cemetery outside Paris back in 2018.

According to Biden, Trump had called the fallen US troops buried there "suckers" and "losers".

Biden expressed his disapproval of Trump's conduct towards the late US military members by saying, "Suckers and losers? The man doesn't deserve to have been the commander in chief of my son."

He also mentioned that Trump "refused to go up to the memorial for veterans in Paris" during his speech in Scranton before the aforementioned statement in Pittsburgh.

Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic published an article covering the disputed claim, stating that Trump "blamed rain for the last-minute decision [not to visit the cemetery], saying that 'the helicopter couldn't fly' and that the Secret Service wouldn't drive him there. Neither claim was true.”

In 2020, evidence came to light that discredits Goldberg's account of an incident involving a visit to a military cemetery by helicopter.

It was discovered that the Navy had made a decision based on the weather conditions, which made it impossible to undertake the helicopter trip to the cemetery.

It is important to note that before leaving for the United States, then-president Donald Trump gave a speech without an umbrella in the rain at a different military cemetery near Paris.

President Joe Biden's speeches often include personal anecdotes that are later found to be untrue, with the apparent intention of connecting with his audiences.

Specifically, he has shared a story about an Amtrak conductor at least 13 times that has since been debunked.

Additionally, he has claimed that his uncle Frank Biden won a Purple Heart despite the fact that the details of his account make this claim factually impossible.

Furthermore, he has stated on two occasions that he was selected to attend the Naval Academy even though there is no supporting documentation to back this assertion.

In 2021, President Biden told Jewish leaders that he recalled “going to” and “spending time at” Pittsburgh's Tree of Life synagogue in 2018 after the deadliest antisemitic attack in US history, in which 11 people were killed.

However, the synagogue has stated that the President never visited, and the White House later clarified that he was referring to a phone call he made to the synagogue's rabbi in 2019.
