ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY: Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small and his wife La'Quetta Small are facing charges of abusing and assaulting their teenage daughter, as announced by the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office on Monday, April 15.

The charges include allegations of hitting the daughter in the head with a broom, causing her to lose consciousness, and multiple instances of physical and emotional abuse.

What are the charges against Marty and La'Quetta Small?

According to a news release from the prosecutor's office, "the defendants physically and emotionally abused their 15/16-year-old-daughter on multiple occasions" between December 2023 and January 2024.

Marty faces charges of making terroristic threats, aggravated assault, and simple assault, while La’Quetta Small, who serves as Atlantic City's superintendent of schools, faces three counts of simple assault, per Fox.

Details provided by the prosecutor's office describe instances where Marty allegedly hit his daughter in the head with a broom, punched her in the legs causing bruises, and threatening to throw her down a staircase and "smack the weave out of her head".

La’Quetta is accused of punching her daughter in the chest, mouth, and dragging her by the hair, among other acts of physical abuse.

Earlier this month, Marty held a news conference at City Hall, where he stated that a search of his home in late March was related to a "private family issue," not a crime. He mentioned that he and his wife have been cooperating with state child welfare authorities.

Both Marty and La’Quetta were issued summons for the charges against them.

Internet outraged over Marty Small and his wife's actions

After Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small and his wife La'Quetta Small faced charges for brutally abusing their daughter, people online vented their anger on the couple.

A user tweeted, "Shame on them. Disgusting parents."

"Both he and his wife should be removed from their duties," another added.

A third said, "And his wife, who just happens to be the superintendent of schools, are charged with physically and emotionally abusing their own daughter. Because nothing says "public servant" like beating and berating your own child, right?"

"Nobody ever knows what goes on behind closed doors...," remarked a user.

"The sad part is they will both be re-elected and be in the same positions next year," read a tweet.
