NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: As the hush money criminal trial began on Monday, April 15, in Manhattan, Donald Trump made a dramatic entrance at the courthouse as he claimed the charges are "an assault on America."

Leaving his Trump Tower residence, the former president prepared for the trial alleging him of falsifying documents concerning hush money paid to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.

Donald Trump says he's 'honored' and 'proud' to face charges

During his appearance in court for the start of jury selection on Monday, April 15, Trump stated he was "honored" and "proud" to be facing the charges, according to Daily Mail.

However, before he left to attend the trial, he expressed his disappointment with the case as he took to social media to accuse Democrats of orchestrating the case as a political weapon to keep him away from the presidential election campaign.

Before entering the court on Monday, April 15, Trump wrote on social media, "People that don't necessarily follow or like Donald Trump said this is an outrage that this case was brought."

"This is political persecution, this is a persecution like never before. It's an assault on America and that's why I'm very proud to be here."

"This is an assault on our country – and it's a country that's failing. It's a country that's run by an incompetent man that's very much involved in this case," he continued.

"This is really an attack on a political opponent. That's all it is, so I'm very honored to be here," the 77-year-old wrote.
