EUCLID, OHIO: The suspect who killed an ex-army Euclid cop during an ambush on Saturday night, May 11 has been found dead after a manhunt concluded in Ohio.

23-year-old Jacob Derbin, who had been a member of the Euclid Police Department for less than a year, was shot and killed by a gunman during a disturbance call at a residence just before 10 pm on Saturday.

According to WJW, Derbin was taken to a nearby hospital but died from his wounds.

Suspect Deshawn Vaughn found dead after fleeing murder scene

Euclid Police have identified the suspect as 24-year-old Deshawn Anthony Vaughn.

The department was receiving assistance from a number of law enforcement agencies in its search for Vaughn, who was described as being about 6'3" and 215 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair.

Police believe that after the fatal shooting, Vaughn—who has a criminal record and was wanted for breaking the terms of his community supervision—fled from the scene, as reported by Fox News.

Police announced on Sunday, May 12, that Vaughn had been found dead inside a house, ending the manhunt. He was heavily armed, according to Euclid Police Chief Scott Meyer. The cause of death is still under investigation.

"He was an amazing human being. Just a great heart. Had an incredible smile. The world’s a better place with him in it," Meyer said about the slain cop.

Authorities honor Jacob Derbin

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed his sympathies to the Euclid community. "Fran and I offer our deepest condolences to Euclid Police Officer Jacob Derbin's family and his brothers and sisters at @Euclid_PD. His bravery and dedication to the Euclid community will not be forgotten," DeWine wrote in a post on X.



 

DeWine declared that all flags would fly at half-staff on Sunday at all public buildings and grounds in Cuyahoga County, the Ohio Statehouse, the Vern Riffle Center, and the Rhodes State Office Tower in remembrance of Officer Derbin's life and service.

They would stand at half-staff until dusk on the day of his funeral. He went on to say that Ohio's public buildings could all take part.

Jacob Derbin was to get married on July 27

Derbin was engaged to Liv Wuebker. The couple's wedding page on The Knot stated that they planned to tie the knot in Minister, Ohio on July 27.

"An awful tragedy. We are going to miss you Jacob. Thank for serving your country in Kuwait, and continuing to serve and protect your community when you came back," Skylar Wuebker, who woul have become Derbin's brother-in-law in just a few months, wrote in a post on Facebook.  

It further read, "Most of all, thank you for coming into our family and loving all of us. Especially Liv. You’ll always be part of our family, and forever my first brother. We will always miss you."
