WASHINGTON, DC: House Republicans have recommended Hunter Biden be charged with contempt of Congress after he refused to appear at a closed-door hearing last month.

Hunter Biden was subpoenaed to testify privately about his business dealings for the impeachment case against his father, President Joe Biden.

Republicans called his actions "contemptuous" and unlawful after he refused to comply with the subpoena for a closed-door testimony.

Kentucky GOP Rep. James Comer, Chairman of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, released the resolution and an accompanying report on Monday, January 8, which recommends first son Hunter Biden face charges.

The panel will consider the resolution on Wednesday morning, January 10, and if passed by Comer's committee and then the entire House of Representatives, where the Republicans enjoy a majority, Hunter would be looking down the barrel of charges relating to contempt of Congress.

Additionally, Rep Comer revealed to Newsmax host Chris Salcedo on Monday that Republicans will move to impeach US Attorney General Merrick Garland if Hunter Biden isn’t arrested for contempt of Congress.

What did Rep James Comer say on Monday?

Rep Comer said in a statement on Monday, "We planned to question Hunter Biden, but he blatantly defied two lawful subpoenas, choosing to read a prepared statement outside of the Capitol instead of appearing for testimony as required."

Last year in November, Hunter Biden expressed his willingness to testify to the Oversight Committee, but only if the hearing was public.

His legal representative, Abbe Lowell, believed that it would "let the light shine" on the proceedings, according to a report by the BBC.

However, when House Republicans refused the request, saying that the president's son must provide private testimony first, Hunter made a rare in-person statement outside the Capitol building on December 13, the day he was to appear before Congress.

In his statement, he slammed Republicans for having allegedly "distorted the facts" and called for a public hearing.

"I'm here today to make sure the House committee's illegitimate investigations of my family do not proceed on distortions, manipulated evidence, and lies, and I'm here today to acknowledge I have made mistakes in my life and wasted opportunities and privileges I was afforded," Hunter Biden said addressing the media.

"For that, I am responsible. For that, I am accountable. And for that, I am making amends."

He continued stating that he would not testify privately, and claimed that there was "no evidence to support the allegations that my father was financially involved in my business, because it did not happen".

"Republicans do not want an open process where Americans can see their tactics, expose their baseless inquiry, or hear what I have to say," Hunter added. "What are they afraid of? I'm here. I'm ready."

The House Republicans' report submitted on Monday read, "Mr Biden's flagrant defiance of the Committees' deposition subpoenas — while choosing to appear nearby on the Capitol grounds to read a prepared statement on the same matters — is contemptuous, and he must be held accountable for his unlawful actions.”

“Accordingly, the chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Accountability recommends that Congress find Robert Hunter Biden in contempt for his failure to comply with the committee subpoena issued to him," the report states.

Rep Comer and House Judiciary Committee Chair Rep Jim Jordan of Ohio said in a joint statement, "Hunter Biden's willful refusal to comply with our subpoenas constitutes contempt of Congress and warrants referral to the appropriate United States Attorney's Office for prosecution.”

"We will not provide him with special treatment because of his last name," the joint statement noted.

The House Republicans have been investigating Hunter Biden's business dealings and if there is any connection to President Biden for many years now, per CBS News.

However, they have not been able to find any evidence of criminal wrongdoing by President Biden.

Last month, the Republicans in the House voted to formalize their impeachment inquiry into the 81-year-old POTUS.

Rep Comer appeared in an interview on Newsmax’s ‘The Chris Salcedo Show’ on Monday where he was asked by the host, “Why the delay in holding Hunter accountable? And if the measure passes, which, given the GOP's recent behavior, is a big if, Merrick Garland doesn't give Hunter Biden the Peter Navarro treatment, won't that be further grounds for his impeachment?”

Comer replied, “I think so. With respect to Merrick Garland, look, we know how he's treated two Republicans that were held in contempt of Congress. Now he's going to have an opportunity to hold the same type of justice with a Democrat that disavowed a lawful subpoena.”

Internet mocks Rep. Comer for suggesting that he’ll move to impeach AG Garland

People on X trolled Comer for suggesting that he’ll impeach the lot if their case comes up short and they don’t achieve the result they’ve been intending all this while, which is to disrupt President Biden’s re-election campaign.

One X user remarked, “They should just rest please"

Another user wrote: "Who else thinks it’s time to impeach @RepJamesComer for wasting taxpayer money & harassment with ZERO EVIDENCE for any of his “trumped up charges?”

Another user said, "That's not how any of this works."

One user stated, "Republicans should get rid of this embarrassment Comer".

Another X user remarked, "These MAGA Republicans use “impeachment” for every person they dislike. Impeachment is a serious charge meant for high crimes and misdemeanors. By continuing to use the word “impeachment” for everything, these people are proving every day that they are not credible. They’re a joke."

Finally, this user tweeted: "At this point, it’s exhausting"
