CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: Eleven-year-old Jayden Perkins died while bravely defending his pregnant mother from her "abusive ex-boyfriend" in Chicago.

The suspect, Crosetti Brand, aged 37, stands accused of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder following the fatal stabbing that occurred on Wednesday, March 13. The attack not only claimed young Jayden's life but also left his mother, Laterria Smith, critically injured, as reported by authorities.

Paroled Crosetti Brand's violent history unfolds

Brand, identified as Smith's former partner, had a troubled history that unfolded ominously before this heartbreaking event. Remarkably, he was on parole after serving a 16-year sentence for a prior home invasion.

Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling disclosed that Brand had been released on parole just one day prior to the tragic incident.

According to Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx, Jayden Perkins succumbed to a fatal stab wound inflicted while courageously attempting to shield his mother from harm.

Chief of Detectives Antoinette Ursitti revealed in a press conference that Brand had been on electronic monitoring since his parole in October, yet he violated the terms by threatening Smith and showing up at her residence.

Consequently, Brand was sent back to prison in February, though the measures proved tragically insufficient to prevent further violence.

Disturbingly, court records unveiled a harrowing history of abuse and threats against Smith, spanning over two decades. Prosecutors revealed that Brand's abusive behavior commenced as far back as September 2006, escalating into a pattern of intimidation, harassment, and violence.

Despite Smith's efforts to protect herself through legal means, including obtaining an order of protection against Brand, the cycle of abuse persisted, culminating in the devastating events of Wednesday morning.
