BRONX, NEW YORK: Jayden Rivera, the 19-year-old suspect in a triple murder, claimed that he heard "voices" as he was babysitting his half-brother, 5, hours before he is believed to have fatally stabbed the child and his parents.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny stated in a news briefing that Rivera was being held at the psychiatric ward of Westchester Medical Center.

An upstate college student, he spontaneously revealed to the medical staff that he “did something bad and that he had killed somebody," claimed Kenny.

The deceased have been identified as the suspect's father, Jonathan Rivera, his girlfriend, Hanoi Peralta, and the couple’s young son, Kayden Rivera. The bodies were discovered at their Mott Haven apartment building early November 26.

Investigators are still working on gathering probable cause for the murder, reported the New York Post.

Suspect complained of 'hearing voices'

Kenny told reporters that Rivera had mentioned to his mother that “he was hearing voices” prior to the stabbing.

"Later on, when he returned home, he stated to his mother again that he was hearing voices and that he thought that Mr Rivera and Ms Peralta were going to hurt him,” he noted.

On the fateful night, the teenage suspect was with his brother, while their father was out with his girlfriend on a date.

However, Kenny stated that neighbors heard someone scream a prayer in Spanish in the hallway, followed by the screams of a man and a woman around 2 am.

Jayden Rivera's mother called 911 when he showed up at her apartment

The responding officials discovered Jonathan, 38, in a pool of blood in the hallway with stab wounds on his chest, at around 6.40 in the morning.

His girlfriend, 33-year-old Peralta, and their son Kayden were discovered in a bedroom, dead and with multiple stab wounds on their torso.

A small kitchen knife and a dented pot were recovered at the scene by the police.

"It appears that after they were stabbed, the victims were beaten with (a) pot to the point that it was dented,” stated Kenny.

Rivera was brought by EMS to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where he remained on November 28.

Suspect's grandfather says there were no signs of turmoil in family

Miguel Rivera, 60, grandfather of both Rivera, the suspect, and Kayden, the victim, told the Post, "I don’t see never like a jealous thing in Jayden. I never seen Jonathan take one side to the other one. No, no, no. Never. Nobody takes a side. Last year we were here for Thanksgiving and Jayden was here and he was playing.”

“My heart is broken for my baby, my youngest grandson. I feel this is not supposed to happen. The day they told me I was thinking this was like a movie or something. But, no. Now it’s real,” added the grieving grandfather.
