HATTIESBURG, MISSISSIPPI: A Mississippi boy, 17, has been charged after 15-year-old Jayna Lumzy was shot and killed at a Hattiesburg apartment complex.

According to the Pine Belt News, the boy was charged with one count of first-degree murder. He was charged as an adult but hasn't been identified due to his age.

On Saturday, March 30, he was taken into custody and admitted to the Forrest County Correctional Facility.

According to Tate Rutland, a public information officer for Hattiesburg Police, the shooting took place at Pineview Apartments early on Monday morning, April 1.

He said that when police arrived at the scene, they discovered Jayna Lumzy unconscious in an outdoor stairwell after hearing gunfire just before five in the morning.

The victim was shot several times, according to Lisa Klem, the coroner for Forrest County. Although she did not survive, officers gave her first aid care until medical personnel could arrive. 

The precise number of shots fired and the location of the injuries have not been disclosed.

Condolences pour in for slain teen

Meanwhile, the family of the 15-year-old, who was a student at Hattiesburg High School, is still grappling with the unthinkable tragedy.

A statement released by the Hattiesburg Public School read, “Our heartfelt condolences are with the family, friends, and HHS community during this very difficult time. Words cannot express the sorrow we feel at the loss of one of our own,” Jackson WLBT reported.

Several condemned the shooting and sent prayers for the deceased on Facebook. A user wrote, "Condolences and Prayers God please give her family strength to deal with this tragedy heal their hearts in Mighty Powerful Name Of Jesus."

Another said, "This is so sad! Another young like taken and another family having to grieve! I’m so sick of this! My prayers and condolences to this young girls family."

A third remarked, "We got to Store rebuke the devil over our children. He is attacking our teenagers soon they won’t be none live rest in peace to this beautiful young lady. I am sad about this, and it tears a piece of my heart, and I don’t even know her."

The family has requested anyone with information about the incident to report it to the police and, if they are involved, turn themselves in.
