SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS: A San Antonio mother protected her two children by locking them in a room before she was tragically shot dead. The San Antonio police responded to a 911 call after discovering that two 20-year-olds were victims of a murder-suicide on Friday, February 9.

Police reported that two toddlers were found locked inside a room at their apartment. They stated that a call was made by Jewel Garcia, who reported that she had been shot.

Upon arrival, officials discovered Jewel and Josiah Moton deceased from gunshot wounds. The Medical Examiner, per CBS Austin, said Moton died by suicide.

Jewel was killed by multiple shots 

According to Jewel's family, she secured her children in a room as the events unfolded. The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services stated that the children "are safe and receiving the care they need."

Marta Pelaez, President and CEO of Family Violence Prevention Services, described the scene at the Southside apartment complex as a somber reminder of a challenging reality.

"We want to raise awareness so that the young people understand that this can happen to anyone,” Pelaez said.

“Our services can be residential at the shelter if you think that the physical integrity is the compromise that you're fearing for your life,” Pelaez added.

What did Jewel Garcia's family say? 

Garcia's family released the statement saying, "Our family is devastated from this tragedy. Jewel Mikayla Garcia was a wonderful person she had a big heart willing to help anyone in need. We are going to miss her so much."

They added, "It hurts us to think or imagine what she went through. That morning she texted her grandma that she Loved her with all her heart. She was excited she was going to visit her Dad and grandma. she never made it."

The family further stated, "We are going to miss her beautiful smile. We know she is in a better place. We ask for continued prayers for her babies and family. Thank you for all the love and support. She was a mommy till the end she made sure to lock her babies in a room before he shot her."

Carrie Wilcoxson, from CPS Case Consultation Services, emphasized the importance of prevention, stating, "Prevention is key. Prevention is key." She highlighted that how one responds to prevention efforts is critical.

"What we've learned is that the way we respond to somebody who is experiencing domestic violence, whether it's the victim or the abuser, can make or break an opportunity for help,” Wilcoxson said.
