Jim Banks expresses 'grave concern' over Tim Walz's military experience, Internet calls it 'awful'
WASHINGTON, DC: Representative Jim Banks (R-Ind) demanded more details regarding the Democratic vice presidential nominee's background and expressed his "grave concern" with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz's portrayal of his military experience in a letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Thursday, August 8.
Republicans have been closely examining the governor's service since he was selected to compete for the Democratic presidential ticket alongside Vice President Kamala Harris. Banks's inquiry, which aims to shed light on a number of issues pertaining to Walz's military record, intensifies their investigation.
What did Jim Banks say in the letter?
Jim Banks, a Navy veteran and chair of the House Armed Services Military Personnel Subcommittee stated in the letter that the people of the United States "deserve transparency," particularly with regard to an elected official's service background.
“Misrepresentation and deceit intended to mislead the public about their service erode the integrity of our military and impact all Americans who choose to serve,” he wrote, according to The Hill.
Tim Walz served 24 years in the Minnesota Army National Guard
Tim Walz was a member of the Minnesota Army National Guard's 1st Battalion in the 125th Field Artillery for 24 years before retiring in 2005.
However, he has come under fire from Republicans for leaving the military to run for Congress just before his unit was deployed to Iraq. Just one day after the governor was selected to run alongside Harris, Senator JD Vance (R-Ohio), Trump's vice presidential campaign partner, criticized Walz on the subject, unleashing a barrage of criticism from the Republican Party.
Advocates for Walz assert that he had filed his paperwork months ahead of his unit's deployment, was in his 40s at the time, and was getting ready to go on a different direction in life. They contend that his unit was staffed to capacity.
Jim Banks' letter suggested Tim Walz knew of the deployment
In his letter, Jim Banks questioned the Minnesota governor's claims on his involvement in Operation Enduring Freedom during the Afghanistan War and implied that Walz was aware of the deployment in early 2005, months before he had filed for retirement.
Walz has also come under fire for utilizing his retirement to hold the post of command sergeant major, which he had earned before retiring at a lower level due to incomplete training. After the investigation, the Harris campaign changed his biography to omit a statement about his retiring as a command sergeant major, Politico revealed.
Jim Banks sought details about Tim Walz's deployment to Iraq
Jim Banks sought details regarding Tim Walz's 2005 deployment to Iraq, including when his previous unit was informed of the deployment and if he was eligible to run for Congress during that time. He also inquired about Walz's service location and retirement level.
“I treat these questions with the utmost gravity,” Banks wrote, adding “Misrepresentation of service and stolen valor allegations tarnish the integrity and service of all who have answered the call to serve.”
Internet says Republicans have become desperate
Netizens scorned the Republicans for dragging Tim Walz's military background after he became Kamala Harris' deputy for this year's presidential election. One X user tweeted, "GOP started rumors that have already been proven as misrepresentations and lies just to stir the pot. Do they have anything better to do? Maybe they should stick to their job?"
Another added, "Whaaat? Why is this a thing? Republicans are just awful." "This is what it looks like when they have nothing. They’re going to lose and they know it," remarked one. "I think they're digging their own graves by going after a veteran," wrote someone else.
