WASHINGTON, DC: In a move that sparked outrage and trolling on social media, Republicans Jim Jordan and Elise Stefanik launched an investigation into the dismissal of the latter's misconduct complaint against federal judge Beryl Howell.

Howell had earlier made comments suggesting former President Donald Trump was an "authoritarian" during his criminal case related to the 2020 presidential election, as reported by New York Post.

In a letter addressed to Chief Judge Sri Srinivasan of the DC Circuit Court of Appeals, Jordan, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, and Stefanik sought further information about the status of the complaint.

According to the letter, the office of the DC Circuit Executive initially claimed that the complaint had been "wrongly filed." Despite this, the complaint was dismissed even after being resubmitted at least twice.

Stefanik and Jordan have requested a meeting with the DC Circuit Executive’s office to review how the complaint was managed.

Stefanik's complaint, filed in December of 2023, arose after Judge Howell delivered a speech at the Women’s White Collar Defense Association (WWCDA) awards gala.

During her speech, Howell, who oversaw grand jury proceedings in Trump’s case involving his alleged attempt to overturn the 2020 election results, referred to the former president as an "authoritarian."

Howell addressed the topic of the "big lies" surrounding the 2020 election, which led to the January 6 Capitol riot. She quoted historian Heather Cox Richardson’s book 'Democracy Awakening,' stating that these lies "are springboards for authoritarians."

The judge also praised Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, who played a significant role in prosecuting Trump in both DC and Florida, where Trump was indicted for allegedly hoarding national security documents.

Earlier this year, President Joe Biden was found to have willfully retained classified documents from his vice presidency. However, the Justice Department did not recommend charges, citing a potential jury perception of Biden as an "elderly man with a poor memory" rather than a deliberate criminal.
