WASHINGTON, DC: President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, according to a White House official, are urging Congress to limit presidential immunity and establish term limits along with a code of behavior on the Supreme Court.

In honor of the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, Biden is scheduled to speak on the proposed reforms on Monday, July 29, at the LBJ Presidential Library, as per the official. In an opinion piece released early on Monday, July 29, Biden also discussed his desire for changes to the Supreme Court.

What did Joe Biden say in op-ed?

"I served as a US senator for 36 years, including as chairman and ranking member of the Judiciary Committee. I have overseen more Supreme Court nominations as senator, vice president and president than anyone living today," Joe Biden wrote in the op-ed published by the Washington Post

"I have great respect for our institutions and separation of powers. What is happening now is not normal, and it undermines the public’s confidence in the court’s decisions, including those impacting personal freedoms. We now stand in a breach," he wrote. Under Biden's revisions, a former president would no longer be immune from prosecution for crimes they committed while in office.

Kamala Harris also endorsed the push

Kamala Harris, who is running for president, endorsed the push. "Today, there is a clear crisis of confidence facing the Supreme Court as its fairness has been called into question after numerous ethics scandals and decision after decision overturning long-standing precedent," she said, according to Fox News

Joe Biden wants to impose a term limit of 18 years for justices

Joe Biden wants to set an 18-year term restriction for judges on the Supreme Court. After it is officially ratified, presidents will be able to select new justices every two years.

Biden argued the new Supreme Court code of conduct should require justices to "disclose gifts, refrain from public political activity, and recuse themselves from cases in which they or their spouses have financial or other conflicts of interest."

What did the White House official say?

"President Biden and Vice President Harris look forward to working with Congress and empowering the American people to prevent the abuse of Presidential power, restore faith in the Supreme Court, and strengthen the guardrails of democracy," the White House official said.

Since formally announcing his resignation from the 2024 presidential run earlier this month, this op-ed is Biden's first significant policy initiative.

Internet says 'Congress needs term limits before anyone'

Netiznes reacted after President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris urged Congress to limit presidential immunity and establish term limits and a code of behavior on the Supreme Court. An X user wrote, "Congress needs term limits before anyone. That being said, there's a reason for this thing called "Separation of Powers" in the USA. He should read up on it. Legislative makes law. Executive Enforces. Judicial Interprets. They of course are trying this for complete control. To do away with our system of checks & balances due to decisions they don't like."

Another wrote, "A much needed measure to root out ethical concerns of bought and paid for SCOTUS judges. Our President continues to plant the seeds for a much brighter tomorrow! #PresidentialGOAT." "Separate branch of government, this is nonsense. Definitely not Biden behind the narrative," added one user.

"The dude wants term limits on them when he should do it to congress," remarked one user while another wrote, "He's known for leaving tremendous shit stains on anything he touches so this would be par for the course."
