WASHINGTON, DC: The Biden administration ceased expedited weapons deliveries to Israel in early January following significant pressure from Democratic lawmakers opposed to US support for Israel's conflict with Hamas, GOP Senator Tom Cotton announced on Thursday, June 20.

Under federal law, the president can bypass formal congressional notifications for arms sales in emergencies, a power the Biden administration had used last year to rapidly supply Israel with the necessary arms to combat Hamas, as per Washington Free Beacon.

However, Cotton claims this emergency acknowledgment ended after a letter from nearly 20 congressional Democrats urged the administration to stop fast-tracking arms to Israel.

"Your administration is engaged in bureaucratic sleight-of-hand to withhold this crucial aid to Israel during a shooting war. You’re playing politics with the nation’s honor and our ally’s security," Cotton wrote in a letter to the White House.

The controversy intensified as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly accused President Joe Biden of withholding US weapons and ammunition vital for Israel's operations against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in the north. While the White House denied these allegations, it admitted to delaying shipments of 2,000-pound and 500-pound bombs.

Cotton, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, criticized the administration for dishonesty regarding the delay, stating it has withheld an array of promised weapons, thereby extending Israel’s war and endangering its soldiers.

"The Arms Export Control Act requires the administration to notify Congress before sending weapons to a foreign country. Your administration has manipulated this requirement by withholding formal notification to Congress of approved weapons sales," Cotton explained.

This strategy, according to Cotton, allows the administration to claim that the weapons are "in process" without actually delivering them.

This tactic has permitted the Biden administration to deny accusations of withholding arms while also appeasing the far-left segment of the Democratic Party, which urges the president to penalize Israel based on claims of genocide.

Following Netanyahu’s accusations, the US reportedly released one arms shipment, but Cotton described this as a "modest step" that fails to rectify the damage caused by the delay.
