WASHINGTON, DC: Senator Tom Cotton made headlines on Sunday, June 16, when he expressed his willingness to consider a potential request from former President Donald Trump to serve as his vice president.

In an interview on CNN’s 'State of the Union', Cotton stated he would "of course, entertain" the hypothetical offer but emphasized his current satisfaction with his role in the Senate, as reported by The Hill.

"I think if the President asked you to serve in any capacity in our great nation, you’d have to consider it," Cotton told host Jake Tapper.

He added, "But I also know that there’s probably only one person who knows who’s on his short list, and I suspect the president will make a decision about his vice president when he’s ready, and it’ll be a good decision for him and the ticket but more importantly, a good decision for the country."

When pressed by Tapper on whether he would accept the position if offered, Cotton reiterated his willingness to consider the role while highlighting his current focus. "If the President asked me to serve in any capacity, I would, of course, entertain it," he expressed.

"But right now, I’m very happy being a senator representing the people of Arkansas and working to elect President Trump and a majority in the Congress so we can begin to repair some of the damage that Joe Biden and the Democrats inflicted over these last four years," Cotton continued.

Cotton's comments come amid increasing speculation about who Trump will choose as his running mate for the 2024 presidential election. According to a report from The New York Times, Cotton has emerged as a significant contender.

The article notes that other potential candidates include Republican Senators JD Vance, Marco Rubio, and Tim Scott, as well as former North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum and Representative Elise Stefanik.

Despite Cotton’s interest, there are policy differences between him and Trump, notably on the issue of military aid to Ukraine. Cotton has been a steadfast supporter of aiding Ukraine, a stance Trump has recently questioned.

During the CNN interview, Cotton avoided directly addressing Trump’s comments on Ukraine, instead highlighting Trump’s strong stance against Russian President Vladimir Putin during his presidency and criticizing President Joe Biden’s policies.

Tom Cotton's openness to vice presidency met with ridicule online

The internet swiftly responded to Cotton's openness to the vice presidency, with many users on social media ridiculing the senator.

One Facebook user commented, "MAGA senators like Cotton serve no purpose other than collecting a check from the taxpayers." Another remarked, "Cotton aka Goofy is a completely shameless individual."

Criticism continued with a third user stating, "Pish. He shouldn’t even be a senator." A fourth user added, "He is fast when running from terrorists in the Capitol, so he has that!" Further comments included, "Cotton has made debasing himself for Trump an Olympic sport," and, "What a waste of our tax funds and a disgraceful person."

A user labeled Cotton as "another member of Trump’s Chumps Club," while another concluded, "Cotton has far too much power for someone as clueless as he is."
