BISMARCK, NORTH DAKOTA: In a move that drew widespread criticism online, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum endorsed Kari Lake in Arizona's high-stakes Senate race on Friday, May 24.

Burgum, a wealthy entrepreneur and potential 2024 running mate for former President Donald Trump, threw his weight behind Lake's campaign by giving her his "complete and total endorsement," as per The Hill.

In a recent statement, Burgum declared, "Kari Lake is the conservative fighter we need to help President Trump Make America Great Again," echoing Trump's famous slogan and extending his "complete and total endorsement" to Lake.

Despite his popularity in North Dakota, Burgum's 2024 presidential campaign failed to gain traction, overshadowed by Trump's dominance in the GOP. Burgum, who has been in office since 2016, is a well-known businessman and investor.

His political trajectory remained strong in North Dakota, but his national aspirations did not materialize as expected. The 67-year-old governor recently attended Trump's New York criminal trial, labeling a potential conviction as a "travesty of justice."

Lake, a former television anchor who lost the 2022 Arizona gubernatorial race, has firmly established herself as a staunch Trump loyalist. While there have been reports of Trump having reservations about her campaign, he has continued to support her.

According to an unnamed source cited by The Washington Post, Trump had advised Lake to focus more on her campaign trail in Arizona rather than spending too much time at his Mar-a-Lago Club.

Nonetheless, Lake has retained her close ties with Trump and maintained her influence within the MAGA movement. Trump endorsed her Senate campaign at its launch in October of 2023 and there were even early speculations of her being a vice-presidential candidate.

Doug Burgum's endorsement of Kari Lake draws flak online

Burgum's endorsement of Lake was met with a torrent of online criticism and mockery. One Facebook user said, "Burgum is another one who ran against Trump and who has now folded like a cheap tent or a bad poker hand. This is just a craven political move, nothing more or less."

Another remarked, "Gotta build those MAGA credentials if you want to play second fiddle to the Orange lunatic."

A third user wrote, "Pretty sure that both of Doug Burgum's supporters are thrilled..." while a fourth user simply stated, "Loser endorses loser." The backlash continued with a fifth user commenting, "The insane supporting the insane. Sounds about right." A sixth user declared, "He just lost any decency/integrity he might have had."

Another lambasted, "All these opportunist scumbags selling their souls to the traitorous MAGAts. Enjoy history, clowns." Dismissing the endorsement, someone else wrote, "As if anybody cares what Doug Burgum thinks."
