WASHINGTON, DC: Former President Joe Biden struck a deeply personal and hopeful tone this holiday season, sharing a Christmas message centered on family, love, and the quiet joy of becoming a great-grandfather even as a separate holiday photo sparked an unexpected online debate.

In a post shared on X during the Christmas holidays, Biden reflected on spending his great-grandson Willie’s first year getting to know him, describing the experience as a powerful reminder of hope for the future. The message, which resonated widely, showed Biden embracing a softer, family-first moment far removed from the intensity of public office.

The Christmas message underscored Biden’s long-standing tendency to frame major moments, political or personal, through the lens of family and empathy. He has often spoken publicly about how family milestones ground him, particularly after decades in public life marked by both personal loss and political upheaval.

This time, the focus was squarely on Willie, Biden’s great-grandson, whose first year of life Biden described as a “blessing.”

“With our hearts full of light and love, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays,” the former president wrote. “Getting to know our great-grandson Willie in his first year has been a blessing and a reminder of the hope we will always have for the future.” He added, “Our wish for you and for our country is that we continue to seek in one another love, kindness, and compassion.”

Christmas Eve photo draws unexpected attention online

However, a separate Biden family photo shared late on Christmas Eve quickly took on a life of its own online, for reasons few anticipated.

Posted around 9 pm, the image showed eight members of the Biden family gathered in front of a decorated Christmas tree, accompanied by a message wishing followers “a peaceful and joyful Christmas Eve filled with love.” While the sentiment was familiar, viewers fixated on the photo’s composition.

Social media users quickly noticed that Biden, now 83, appeared partially obscured in the background of the image, standing behind former first lady Jill Biden. In contrast, his son Hunter Biden and Hunter’s daughter Maisy were positioned prominently at the center of the frame.

For many online observers, the visual arrangement felt unusual given Biden’s long-standing role as the family’s most visible public figure.

Within hours, the image began circulating widely, with commentary ranging from lighthearted jokes to pointed speculation.

One viral post quipped, “Hunter is the alpha now,” while others questioned whether the photo reflected a shift in family dynamics or was simply an awkwardly timed snapshot.
