WILMINGTON, DELAWARE: Hunter Biden’s ongoing federal trial on gun charges is making waves, especially after a resurfaced voicemail from his father, President Joe Biden, urging him to "get some help" just days after Hunter allegedly lied about his drug addiction to buy the firearm at the center of the case.

Audio of Joe Biden’s message, which was initially recovered from Hunter Biden’s abandoned laptop, has resurfaced courtesy of the Daily Mail. This coincides with the opening statements in Hunter Biden's trial in a Delaware courtroom on Tuesday, June 4.

2018 voicemail resurfaces amid Hunter Biden's gun trial

The elder Biden's message, dated October 15, 2018, reveals his awareness of his son's struggles with addiction during that period.

“It’s Dad. I’m calling to tell you I love you. I love you more than the whole world, pal. You’ve gotta get some help,” President Biden is heard saying in the voicemail. “I don’t know what to do, I know you don’t either. I’m here, no matter what you need. No matter what you need, I love you.”

The younger Biden, 54, has pleaded not guilty to three felony charges stemming from the October 12, 2018, gun purchase. According to his memoir, during this period, he was battling a severe addiction to crack cocaine.

Prosecutors argue that Hunter illegally possessed the Colt Cobra .38-caliber revolver for 11 days before Hallie Biden, his sister-in-law-turned-lover, disposed of the weapon in the trash.

It remains unclear if the voicemail, initially made public by the Daily Mail and later broadcast by Fox News’s Sean Hannity two years ago, will be used as evidence in the trial.

During a pretrial conference last month, Judge Maryellen Noreika permitted prosecutors to present select information from Hunter’s laptop to the 12-person jury, while allowing the defense to object to evidence on a case-by-case basis.

Notably, Noreika ruled that prosecutors are not required to prove that Hunter was under the influence of drugs at the time of the gun purchase.

Prosecutors have also introduced excerpts from Hunter's 2021 book, 'Beautiful Things', which detail his struggles with addiction. Additionally, texts uncovered from Hunter’s laptop showed he communicated with an individual with a criminal record, including gun charges, prior to purchasing the firearm.

These messages suggest that the two met up the day after Hunter bought the gun. It is yet to be determined if these texts will be presented as evidence in the trial.

Bidens trolled on social media

That said, the Bidens were widely mocked on social media after the 2018 voicemail resurfaced.

"'Get some help.' That’s it? Some Father," one posted on X.

"Does 'I’m here no matter what you need' apply to Hunter's criminal charges as well?" another quipped.

"Wait?!? Joe cared enough about his son to tell him to get help? Oh boy the COMPASSION!!! Stop trying to make Fetch happen. WE STILL DON’T CARE," someone else fumed.

"Hope he is found guilty and goes to jail. After all, nobody’s above the law. Right, Dad?" a comment read.

"And we all know Biden will pardon him no matter how serious the charges might be," another offered.

Family support amid legal troubles

Hunter Biden appeared in court flanked by his wife Melissa Cohen, his stepmother First Lady Jill Biden, and his half-sister Ashley. If convicted, Hunter faces up to 25 years in prison.

This trial comes after a previously arranged plea deal with the Justice Department fell apart when Hunter's defense team discovered the agreement would not protect him from potential future prosecutions.

In addition to the gun charges, Hunter Biden is facing another legal battle in Los Angeles, where he is scheduled for trial in September for allegedly failing to pay $1.4 million in federal taxes between 2016 and 2019. Hunter has since paid this amount, but the legal proceedings continue, the New York Post reported.
