WASHINGTON, DC: President Joe Biden fell short of lauding the Supreme Court's ruling on the abortion pill as he reminded voters that the fight for women's reproductive freedom is not over.

The statement came following the Supreme Court's ruling on the regulation of the abortion pill mifepristone on Thursday, June 13.

Biden stressed the decision does not stop the fight for reproductive health. The president also highlighted the struggles women face in accessing reproductive care.

"Today's decision does not change the fact that the fight for reproductive freedom continues," Biden said.

"It does not change the fact that the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade two years ago, and women lost a fundamental freedom," he said.

"It does not change the fact that the right for a woman to get the treatment she needs is imperiled if not impossible in many states,” he added.

While the ruling permits women to "continue to access" mifepristone, Biden highlighted additional legislation that demonstrates the ongoing struggle for reproductive rights.

"Women are being turned away from emergency rooms, or forced to go to court to plead for care that their doctor recommended or to travel hundreds of miles for care," the president stated.

"Doctors and nurses are being threatened with jail time, including life in prison, for providing the health care they have been trained to provide."

He criticized Republican officials' efforts as part of an "extreme and dangerous agenda" to "ban abortion nationwide."

Biden said "stakes could not be higher for women across America," affirming his commitment alongside Vice President Kamala Harris to support reproductive rights.

Biden said. “We will continue to fight to ensure that women in every state get the health care they need and we will continue to call on Congress to restore the protections of Roe v Wade in federal law — that is our commitment," The Hill reported.

Vice President Harris, in a statement distributed by the Biden-Harris campaign, blamed former President Donald Trump for the current situation, noting that the overturning of Roe v Wade resulted from the conservative justices he appointed.

"The contrast is stark: While Trump relentlessly attacks reproductive freedoms, President Biden and I will never stop fighting to protect them," Harris said.

"Americans have repeatedly made it clear they want more freedom, not less, and they will make their voices heard at the ballot box once again this November," she added.

Abortion has remained a key issue for Democrats since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade in 2022, leading to unexpected wins in the midterm elections. Democrats hope to replicate this success in the current election cycle.
