NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Comedian Jon Stewart returned after recovering from Covid-19 to host 'The Daily Show', where he tore into GOP nominee and former President Donald Trump for missing incumbent Joe Biden as a rival in the 2024 presidential election race.

Biden was the presumptive Democratic nominee for the November election, when his abysmal performance in the first presidential debate against Trump towards the end of June, raised concerns across the aisle over his mental acuity to continue as the commander-in-chief for another term. As opposition to his candidacy grew within the Democratic Party, Biden suspended his reelection campaign on July 21 and nominated Vice President Kamala Harris.

Donald Trump's frustration with the switch in Democratic ticket

Stewart claimed that Trump “is in pain right now”, as he cited multiple reports of him having a meltdown over the strong polling figures and enthusiasm over the Harris campaign.

“A month ago, he was basically already the f**king president. He had cheated death, started a new ear accessory trend. Back then, people thought his VP selection was a smart choice. He had it all in the bag, and it was taken away," said the host in his monologue.

Trump survived an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. A sniper's bullet grazed his right year and resulted in him appearing at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee days later with a large bandage on it. He announced Sen JD Vance (R-Ohio) as his running mate on the first day of the RNC.

“But now instead of enjoying the fruit of six years of Biden attacks, Trump’s gotta start all over again. And the audience has to literally sit through him getting up to speed,” mocked Stewart, and proceeded to show clips of Trump mispronouncing and misspelling Harris’s first name.

Stewart went after the former President for recycling most of the same attacks he used on Biden against Harris on his campaign trail with faux sympathy, saying, "Look, people, they pulled the candidate Trump was crushing. It’s hard. You think you could write a new hour in a month? It’s not easy! He’s trying!”

“Look man, if you want us to genuinely fear your opponent as the existential threat you’d like to make them out to be, you’re going to have to do better than boilerplate, cut-and-paste s**t,” he advised. “You’re better than this, Donald."

“I hate to say it: I don’t think Trump has got it in him to go after Kamala Harris. He’s been fighting Joe Biden for six years, it’s all he knows,” claimed Stewart, sharing that Trump was still trying out nicknames for Biden over the weekend.

"This is sad. It’s like seeing an old man talking to an empty spot on the bench, and then you realize – that’s where his wife used to sit," he observed, adding, "He’s not coming back, Donald.”
