LAS VEGAS, NEVADA: Four of the nine teens charged as adults in the tragic beating death of high school student Jonathan Lewis are facing second-degree murder charges as announced by Clark County Chief Deputy District Attorney John Giordani during a court hearing on January 18.

The teenagers, identified as Damien Hernandez, 17, Dontral Beaver, 16, Gianni Robinson, 17, and Treavion Randolph, 16, are set to be indicted by a grand jury, after Lewis Jr tragically succumbed to injuries sustained in a brutal beating that occurred just outside Rancho High School shortly after school hours on November 1, 2023.

The incident, captured on cellphone video and widely shared on social media, led to the indictment of the four. DA Giordani revealed during a court hearing that the indictment also includes charges of conspiracy to commit battery, a gross misdemeanor.

Las Vegas police have reported that a total of 10 students, aged between 13 and 17, participated in the beating, and the investigation is ongoing to locate the 10th suspect. Subsequently, the DA added the other students are awaiting separate hearings.

What was the motive behind the teen fight?

Police believe that a conflict over a stolen vape pen and a pair of wireless headphones escalated, leaving students, teachers, and staff grappling with the aftermath of the tragic incident.

Lt Jason Johansson described the cellphone video of the incident, stating that Lewis Jr prepared for a fight by removing his shirt, after which the group of students “immediately swarm him, pull him to the ground and begin kicking, punching and stomping on him,” KSAT reported.

The 17-year-old died a week after the assault.

In Nevada, teenagers facing murder charges can be charged as adults if they were 13 or older at the time of the alleged crime. The indictment against the four accused individuals is expected to be returned soon, with a scheduled status hearing on Monday, January 22.

Depending on the outcome of the indictment, the court may decide to cancel the Monday hearing, and an arraignment is anticipated on January 24 as per standard procedure.
