WASHINGTON, DC: At a hearing over special counsel Jack Smith's appointment to probe the former president, district court judge Aileen Cannon pressured Donald Trump's legal team to refute an astounding allegation about the former president, stated Raw Story.

According to CNN, Smith, who has accused the former president in Florida and Washington, DC, was not legitimately designated as special counsel. Smith's legal team and some political friends contend that this amounts to a 'shadow government', and Cannon questioned him about it.

Cannon said to Trump lawyer Emil Bove, "That sounds very ominous. But what do you really mean?"

This would allow Bove to ascertain whether Smith was functioning on his initiative or at the behest of the person who had appointed him.

Notably, Bove said that the special counsel was still not reporting to anybody, despite Cannon pointing them that Smith needed to adhere to Justice Department standards.

Moreover, while asserting that Garland could dismiss Smith 'this very moment' if he so desired, federal prosecutor James Pearce subsequently claimed that the attorney general had not seen all of the special counsel's rulings.

Notably, three days of hearings about legal arguments in the Mar-a-Lago classified materials case have been scheduled by Cannon. Among the issues raised by the prosecution are two requests for gag orders against Trump and the legality of Smith's job funding.
