WASHINGTON, DC: Vice President Kamala Harris has once again drawn attention for seemingly altering her accent during her speech at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation dinner on Saturday night.

The event, held in Washington, DC, was a glitzy affair where President Joe Biden was honored with a lifetime achievement award.

Kamala Harris’s accent shift during speech at Black Caucus dinner draws criticism

At the beginning of her address, Kamala Harris, 59, appeared to shift her tone of voice briefly. She greeted the audience with a cheery, “Hello to all my divine nine brothers and sisters…”

A nod to the prominent fraternities and sororities from historically Black colleges and universities. Harris herself is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority from Howard University.

Throughout the rest of her speech at the Phoenix Awards dinner, Harris generally maintained her usual speaking style, though her accent seemed to change occasionally when she became animated.

This accent variation quickly drew criticism. Some detractors accused Harris of pandering to her audience by altering her accent depending on the context, particularly at events with predominantly Black attendees.

The Trump campaign’s War Room criticized Harris, stating, “Kamala speaking in her fake accent says ‘hello to all my divine 9 brothas and sistas’ followed by a loud cackle.”

Earlier this month, netizens accused Harris of using a “fake accent”. The controversy intensified after her Labor Day rally in Detroit, Michigan, where many viewers perceived her altered accent as insincere. Earlier instances include her use of a Southern drawl at a rally in Atlanta in July and a French accent in 2021.

Critics react to Kamala Harris’s ‘mysterious accent’ at Black caucus dinner

Critics have taken to social media to express their opinions on Vice President Kamala Harris’s apparent accent shift during her speech at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation dinner.

One user wrote, "Kamala Harris is speaking in front of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation so of course she’s suddenly developed a mysterious accent…"

Another user commented, "“Last night, Kamala Harris revealed a new accent at the Black Caucus Dinner. Despite a childhood in Berkley, California and Montreal, Canada, Kamala uses what she thinks is a Detroit accent, a southern accent, a French accent, and more…”

One said, "Kamala Harris is whatever you want her to be, depending on which audience she is talking to. She never makes a lot of sense, but I give her credit for being able to change her accent for so many audiences!"

Another user replied, "She might be the fakest politician ever."

Another added, "Imagine negotiating serious issues with potential adversaries and just breaking a cackle every other nanosecond. Seems adequate."
