Kamala Harris says a 'tense' Jill Biden gave Doug Emhoff a ‘loyalty test’ before Joe quit 2024 race

WASHINGTON, DC: Kamala Harris has alleged that Jill Biden pulled her husband Doug Emhoff aside during a July 4, 2024 White House celebration to test their loyalty.
The claim appears in Harris’ political memoir '107 Days', set for release on September 23, 2025.
Kamala Harris recalls Jill Biden’s loyalty test at White House
Kamala Harris alleged that Jill Biden confronted her husband Doug Emhoff during a July 4, 2024 White House celebration.
In her upcoming memoir '107 Days', Harris wrote that Jill pulled Emhoff aside and asked directly if they were “supporting us.” She described Jill as “tense, even angry” during the exchange.
Emhoff assured her they were loyal, but Jill snapped back, “We need to know that.” Harris said her husband returned visibly upset and frustrated that his loyalty had been doubted.

Joe Biden’s struggles added to the tension
The tense encounter came just weeks before Joe Biden, then 82, dropped out of the 2024 presidential race on July 21.
Biden was under mounting pressure after his disastrous June 27 debate against Donald Trump, which sparked widespread concerns about his mental fitness.
Harris admitted she had never seen Biden display such “confusion, incoherence, and debility” during her years as his vice president.

Kamala Harris suggests Jill Biden never forgave her debate attack
Harris said Jill’s suspicions may have stemmed from the 2019 Democratic primary debate, when Harris criticized Biden’s past opposition to busing.
“I had always admired Jill for her fierce loyalty to her family,” Harris wrote. “But I suspect she hadn’t quite forgiven me for that debate moment.”
The rift seemed to resurface when Jill allegedly warned Emhoff after Biden’s withdrawal: “Be careful what you wish for. You’re about to see how horrible the world is.”

Kamala Harris calls Biden’s 2024 campaign decision reckless
Harris explained she had followed the White House “mantra” that Biden would decide with his family if he wanted to run again.
Looking back, she described that approach as reckless. “The stakes were simply too high,” Harris wrote, questioning whether the decision was grace or recklessness.
She also revealed that when choosing her running mate in 2024, she consulted Bill and Hillary Clinton for advice but did not turn to the Bidens.
Kamala Harris’ book tour and Doug Emhoff’s current role
'107 Days' covers the chaotic 107 days between Biden’s withdrawal and Election Day 2024, when Harris became the Democratic nominee.
The book also highlights strained relations, as Harris thanked Biden in her acknowledgments but left out Jill’s name.
Harris is now preparing for a 15-city book tour across the US, Canada, and the UK to promote the memoir this fall.
Doug Emhoff continues his role as second gentleman, focusing on civil rights, antisemitism awareness, and legal education. He remains a visible and supportive figure in Harris’ political journey.
Harris’ memoir is expected to reignite debate over loyalty, ambition, and personal rivalries inside the Democratic Party during one of its most turbulent elections.
