NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Former Vice President Kamala Harris returned to the spotlight at the 2025 Met Gala in New York - her first time attending the event since leaving office in January.

She attended the event with her husband, Doug Emhoff, surrounded by heavy security and media attention. Although Harris attended the event, she opted not to take part in the traditional red carpet arrivals.

Instead, she entered the Metropolitan Museum of Art through a less public side entrance, deliberately avoiding the highly visible portion of the evening.

The event, hosted by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, comes as Harris considers running for California governor in 2026 or for president in 2028.

However, Harris faced backlash online as images and videos of her at the 2025 Met Gala quickly spread across social media.

Many X users criticized her presence at the exclusive event, calling it “tone-deaf” and “out of touch” given the high cost of attendance.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris made a high-profile appearance at the 2025 Met Gala in New York City on Monday night, fueling speculation about a potential political comeback.

This year’s Met Gala theme, 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,' celebrated the evolution of Black dandyism.

The 2024 Democratic presidential nominee, who lost her bid for the White House, wore a custom black-and-white silk gown designed by Off-White creative director IB Kamara.

The outfit featured a dramatic scarf, a statement sleeve, and a pleated skirt. Harris, 60, revealed the look in a Vogue Magazine portrait taken by former White House photographer Cameron Smith.

She was accompanied by her husband, former second gentleman Doug Emhoff, who wore a tuxedo by Italian designer Brunello Cucinelli, as per DailyMail.

Talk of her attendance began swirling after the couple was seen leaving the celebrity-favored Polo Bar in Manhattan the night before the gala. Their outing was heavily guarded, with Secret Service agents, NYPD officers, and a motorcade of SUVs securing the scene as the pair posed for photos with fans inside.

The Met Gala, known for its elite guest list and extravagant fashion, is a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute and is tightly curated by Vogue editor-in-chief Wintour.

As part of the Met's Costume Institute exhibit launch, guests were asked to follow the dress code “Tailored For You,” which encouraged attendees to showcase styles that reflected their personal identity and fashion sensibilities.

In a statement to Vogue, Harris commended the Costume Institute for spotlighting the cultural and historical significance of Black dandyism in both fashion and American society.

“Art has always had a significant impact on not just culture, but also our policies and politics,” Harris said.

“Whether it’s dance, music, visual arts, or fashion - has a way of capturing the mood and language of the people without words. Art has the power to shape the conversation about where we are today and where we need to go.”

Internet slams Kamala Harris' 2025 Met Gala appearance

As photos and videos of Kamala Harris getting ready for and attending the 2025 Met Gala surfaced online, many social media users responded with criticism rather than praise for her appearance.

One user shared, "You really never ever read the room."

A commenter said, "Democrat party is so out of touch lmao."

An X user wrote, "Kamala Harris Is Tweakin 🤪"

Another social media user wrote, "Continuing to demonstrate how in touch with the average American y'all are."

A person exclaimed, "Totally the party of the working class."

An online user questioned, “Stuns what? Looks like she gained some lbs.”

A social media user commented, “Not even pretending to be in touch with everyday Americans, I see.”

Another X user added, “Don’t make me throw up 🤢”

A social media user mocked, "Is that the new Disney version of Cruella Deville??"
