ATLANTA, GEORGIA: As US forces scrambled to locate a missing pilot after multiple aircraft were struck in Iran, CNN's Kristen Holmes drew attention to what she described as a glaring lack of response from President Donald Trump.

Speaking on CNN on April 3, Friday, Holmes noted that for hours, the president’s only public remark was a brief post - “KEEP THE OIL ANYONE?” despite an active rescue mission and confirmed aircraft losses.

Holmes flags Trump's silence as crisis unfolds

During a live exchange with anchor Pamela Brown, Holmes made it clear that communication from the White House had been minimal.

“We’ve really been hearing almost nothing from the White House,” she said, before laying out what little had emerged publicly.

She stressed that Trump’s messaging did not reflect the seriousness of the moment, pointing out that “President Trump himself publicly has only done one thing in the last six hours saying, ‘keep the oil, anyone.’”

She contrasted that with the reality on the ground, adding there had been “no actual response to the fact that this ongoing search and rescue mission has happened, that someone was rescued, that this plane was shot down.”

Holmes also brought in the broader diplomatic angle, explaining that even Trump’s brief comments about negotiations raised more questions than answers.

“We don’t actually know what is happening with those negotiations,” she said, walking viewers through how a planned in-person meeting had first been delayed, then rescheduled, and ultimately appeared to “completely fizzle out.”

Confusion over strategy as White House delays communication

Beyond the president’s remarks, Holmes suggested there may have been an internal decision to control messaging during the crisis tightly.

She said she had been told the administration wanted updates to come through US Central Command, rather than issuing piecemeal statements from the White House.

“I was told originally, they wanted everything to be streamlined,” she explained. But that approach appears to have backfired, as the expected update never arrived.

“They kept telling me it was coming. It still has not come,” Holmes said, highlighting the lack of clarity.

The silence stood in sharp contrast to Trump’s earlier confidence about the conflict.

Holmes referenced his previous claim: “We literally have planes flying over Tehran. They can’t do anything about it.”

Now, with US aircraft down, one crew member still missing, and rescue operations continuing under fire, her reporting highlighted a widening gap between rhetoric and reality and a growing urgency for clearer communication as events continue to unfold.
