DALLAS, TEXAS: A Texas woman has been charged with murder after confessing to the shooting death of her 80-year-old grandmother.
Kelsie Miles, 30, reportedly arrived at the Grand Prairie Police Department around 5 am on Sunday, March 17, and informed officers that she had shot her 80-year-old grandmother, Betty Lou Hearn. The incident occurred at their shared residence on Colwick Avenue in East Oak Cliff, Dallas.
Insights into the tragic shooting
"Miles did drive to the Grand Prairie Police Department where she met officers outside in the parking lot and told them about the shooting in Dallas," a spokesperson from the department explained. "Officers detained her and contacted Dallas PD who responded to our detention center where they took custody of her."
The Dallas Police Department subsequently took custody of her. Responding to the scene of the shooting, "Officers responded to the address, and after receiving no response from anyone inside and having reason to believe someone may need immediate medical help, the officers forced entry into the home," per Fox.
"Once inside, officers located 80-year-old Betty Hearn on the floor, shot to the head. Dallas Fire Rescue responded, and Hearn died at the scene." Miles informed police that the firearm she used in the shooting was in her car. Officers recovered a Smith and Wesson .380 from the vehicle, as stated in the affidavit.
Neighbors devastated by the loss of Betty Lou Hearn
Neighbors expressed shock and disbelief upon learning of Hearn's tragic death. Nathan Jackson, who regarded Hearn as a second mother, said, "Me and her kids went to school together and grew up together on this block. She treated us like her kids. She was a good lady." Authorities have not disclosed any potential motive for the shooting.
Following her arrest, Miles was transported to the Dallas County Jail, where she is being held on a $750,000 bond. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
