Kennedy Center president Richard Grenell hails Trump's vision for institution amid major revamp
WASHINGTON, DC: As President Donald Trump hosts the 2025 Kennedy Center Honors, the center's president Richard Grenell has decided to look differently at how extensively the institution's buildings and operations have changed.
The changes at the Kennedy Center in 2025 have been quite substantial, not only in terms of the physical structure but also the leadership.
Following Trump's orders, a completely new board of trustees was appointed, and it was decided that Grenell, a person experienced in diplomacy, would take the presidential role.
Besides the building changes that are part of the revamp as per Grenell's description, there are also a lot of changes in the agenda of the center: changes in the people who get the awards, a new look, and a businesslike approach to cultural products.
Two big financial allocations for Kennedy Center
In a public message, Grenell said, "The President gave us two $50 million to redo this place in the Big Beautiful Bill, and we've been working hard on it.”

“When I arrived here, the fountains didn't work, the lights didn't work, and people were getting stuck in the elevators. And so we really had to change a lot of that," said Grenell
He described how upgrades to infrastructure, from plumbing and lighting to elevators and general maintenance were underway, part of a broader push to restore the center’s aesthetic and functional character.
Kennedy Center overhaul has not stopped at repairs
Grenell said the center changed its programming philosophy to what he described as ‘common-sense programming.’
Rather than cancelling shows wholesale, he said the center now balances future performances against three revenue streams: ticket sales, donations, and corporate sponsorships.'
"We also changed the programming so that it was common sense programming, and I have a finance background, so what I just simply did, I didn't cancel a single show. I just required all of our shows and all of the future shows to take ticket sales into account, and donors and corporations between those three revenue sources."
As part of the honors broadcast in December, Trump made the one-of-a-kind decision to be the face of the event and, thus, become the first US president in the history of the office to do so, and he handed over the medals to the awardees of this year.
