Kequan O Herring: Kansas man shoots into apartment killing 45-year-old who was not 'the intended target'
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI: A 28-year-old man was charged with murder and three other felonies by Jackson County prosecutors after he killed a resident of an apartment building in Kansas City last week.
Kequan O Herring, of Kansas City, is accused by prosecutors of two counts of armed criminal action, unlawful weapon use, and second-degree felony murder.
Who did Kequan O Herring kill?
Early on November 28, Herring is said to have opened fire into an apartment building in the Central Blue Valley neighborhood of Kansas City, killing Calvin L Boyles, 45, while he was inside his home.
Boyles was not "the intended target" of the shooting, according to neighbors, according to a probable cause affidavit that a Kansas City police detective prepared in support of Herring's criminal charges.
Police from Kansas City were called to the shooting scene in the 1900 block of Park Tower Road just after midnight, Kanas City Star reported.
Boyles was discovered inside the house with gunshot wounds and declared dead at the scene. According to the affidavit, detectives and crime scene investigators found 23 spent shell casings on a hill close to the building's rear entrance, which is where Boyles was found.
Boyles' apartment walls had obvious bullet holes in them. Witnesses pointed investigators in the direction of a woman who had been "actively feuding" with Herring for a few months prior to the shooting.
She told of Herring's tense encounter with her at a gas station the afternoon before the shooting, where he and several others were carrying guns. According to the affidavit, she later claimed to have learned that her house and her neighbor's car had been "shot up."
What do investigators say?
Investigators looked at surveillance footage from a gas station that purports to show Herring entering the store. The affidavit states he and others were observed driving a gray sedan.
Detectives connected the same sedan to another incident in which shots were fired into a car close to East 23rd Street and Topping Avenue. A gray sedan with tinted windows was reported to have been shot into by a homeowner, and the shooters made off with it.
Three persons were seen on camera firing toward the car from nearby surveillance cameras. According to the affidavit, one of them was dressed in clothing that resembled Herring's from the gas station earlier in the day.
The Chevrolet Malibu sedan, registered to Herring, had a license plate number that the detectives were able to obtain. According to the affidavit, automated license plate readers captured footage of the car being driven in the vicinity of the shootings.
The affidavit states that shell casings recovered from the shooting scene were examined and, hours later, compared to those found at the murder.
The affidavit also states that a cellphone connected to Herring by police files and his parole officer was found to have been at both locations at the time of the shooting. On Wednesday, Kansas City police officers conducting surveillance at Herring's residence took him into custody.
Herring denied having anything to do with the shootings when questioned by the police. Herring had a $300,000 cash bond and was being held at the Jackson County jail. As of Friday, there was no defense lawyer listed in online court records for him.
