WASHINGTON, DC: In a bold statement, former Speaker Kevin McCarthy expressed strong support for Donald Trump's nomination as the Republican presidential candidate, despite Trump’s recent criminal conviction.

When asked on CNN’s 'Inside Politics' if it is a "good idea" for the Republican Party to formally nominate Trump, McCarthy responded with an emphatic "100 per cent yes," as reported by Mediaite.

Trump was convicted on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to hush money payments meant to cover up affairs during the 2016 election.

His sentencing is scheduled for July 11, and Trump has vowed to appeal the verdict. This conviction makes Trump the first major party nominee in US history to be a convicted felon, a fact that McCarthy and many conservatives believe will not hinder his campaign but may instead bolster it.

Speaking to CNN’s Manu Raju, McCarthy firmly stated, "Listen, is it a good idea that Donald Trump is the nominee? The answer’s 100%, yes. Will Donald Trump win this presidency? The answer is yes." He argued that the trial was politically motivated, claiming that it only proceeded because Trump ran for president.

Despite McCarthy's confident endorsement, questions remain about the political implications of nominating a convicted felon. Raju pressed McCarthy on whether the conviction might alienate independent and female voters.

McCarthy deflected, suggesting that voters are more concerned with the current administration’s policies, especially those of President Joe Biden.

"This is a reelection of Joe Biden for president. Joe Biden is running on, democracy is on the ballot, Biden economics. These are the two driving things that people are opposed to. Do people want four more years of this?" McCarthy expressed.

He eventually conceded that while there may be initial concerns about the conviction, it wouldn’t ultimately sway the November election. "People will have some concerns about it, but it’s not gonna determine this election," McCarthy explained.

Kevin McCarthy's stance on Donald Trump's GOP nomination draws flak online

Another user commented, "The RNC is now a Trump family business. Trump is taking down the GOP with him in November." A third user wrote, "Four years ago Republican had little trouble nominating a dishonest, immature, vindictive lying coward. Why would they care if Trump is now also a felon?"

Another user mentioned, "Amazed how these GOPers can walk upright without a spine." One user stated, "Trump supporters are exactly like those damaged women who fall in love with serial killers on Death Row, everyone is wrong except for the criminal they are in love with."

Another said, "So in other words, the Republicans want a guy who can't even own a firearm to be in charge of the country's nuclear weapons. You just cannot make this stuff up."

A seventh user commented, "History will not be kind to this party of spineless traitors who, almost to the last, chose a convicted orange felon and lifelong grifter over freedom, democracy, our Constitution and the rule of law..."
