CINCINNATI, OHIO: Following a toddler's shooting death this week in Covington, Kentucky, the boy's parents have been taken into custody.
Khalil Adams, age 2 years, was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital on Monday, January 22, but he succumbed to his injuries.
Parents charged with second-degree manslaughter
Selena Farrell, the boy's mother, allegedly left the scene before Covington Police arrived and never showed up at the hospital.
They claimed that they thought she was hiding due to a warrant for a probation violation, Fox19 reported.
Kenton County Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Sanders earlier said that following the shooting, although there was an arrest warrant out for her, she wasn't thought to have shot the boy.
Sanders claimed that Farrell was helped to hide in a hotel by the boy's father, Tashaun Adams. Kenton County authorities detained Farrell, 23, on Thursday, according to WLWT. Adams was also arrested on Thursday.
The 21-year-old Adams is being held in Boone County. Both have been charged with second-degree manslaughter, according to Sanders.
Adams is also accused of impeding the prosecution, and Farrell is accused of violating her probation, abandoning a minor, and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.
The shooting's specifics have not been made public by police.
Baby Zeke's father kidnapped and murdered him
In December 2023, a similar incident happened in Idaho. On December 2, 2023, Zeke Best, a 10-month-old boy, was abducted by his father, Jeremy Albert Best, and discovered dead.
Best was also suspected of murdering Kali Jean Randall, Zeke's mother, on November 30, 2023. Best was first spotted in the nude in a Swan Valley, Idaho, store.
After his discharge from the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, Randall's apparent homicide death was reported in a 911 call. Zeke and his father were the focus of a thorough search because the authorities deemed the father to be "heavily armed and dangerous".
Best was discovered next to Zeke's body; he was still alive but had injuries. It's still unknown what caused the death. The FBI is one of several law enforcement organizations looking into the scene.
Before being taken into Bonneville County Jail on a homicide warrant, Best was taken into custody and given medical attention for his wounds. In Boise, Zeke's body will be examined by an autopsy to ascertain the reason behind the child's demise.
