Laura Loomer slams GOP as Speaker Mike Johnson opposes Trump's demand to avoid government shutdown
WASHINGTON, DC: Far-right commentator Laura Loomer tore into Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La) and the House Republicans after congressional leaders reached an agreement on Sunday, September 22, to avoid a government shutdown.
The development was directly against the wishes of Donald Trump as he had stated his support for disrupting the government in order to pass the SAVE Act, legislation that would require voters to show proof of citizenship.
What measure did House leaders announce?
According to the Associated Press, lawmakers finalized a short-term spending bill that would fund federal agencies for about three months. It would defer a possible partial government shutdown when the new budget year begins on October 1 as the final decisions could be made in November after the election.
While temporary spending bills fund agencies at the current level, an additional $231 million was included in the present bill to be utilized on the Secret Service after the apparent attempted assassinations of Trump. Additional funds to ensure a smooth transition of presidential power were also allotted in the bill.
Mike Johnson's stance against Donald Trump's wishes
Donald Trump had urged House GOP to shut down the government if they were not able to tie the funding bill to the SAVE Act, which stems from the MAGA's baseless claim of election interference in 2020.
“If Republicans in the House, and Senate, don’t get absolute assurances on Election Security, THEY SHOULD, IN NO WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM, GO FORWARD WITH A CONTINUING RESOLUTION ON THE BUDGET. ... CLOSE IT DOWN!!!” the GOP nominee wrote on Truth Social last month.
However, Johnson announced that the funding bill would be put to vote within the week to keep the federal government open through December 20.
According to NBC News, he wrote in a letter to his colleagues that the "legislation will be a very narrow, bare-bones CR including only the extensions that are absolutely necessary."
"While this is not the solution any of us prefer, it is the most prudent path forward under the present circumstances. As history has taught and current polling affirms, shutting the government down less than 40 days from a fateful election would be an act of political malpractice," he added.
Laura Loomer blasts Mike Johnson and House GOP
Laura Loomer took to X (formerly Twitter) to comment on the recent development, and strongly criticized Speaker Mike Johnson and the House GOP for choosing a bipartisan approach to keep the federal government functional.

"Nothing has changed since 2020. The sooner you come to terms with the GOP’s desire to drop the ball the more grounded in reality you will become," she continued.
"It’s so pathetic how inept these people are. They need to constantly lose so that they have something to fundraise over," Loomer added.
