Liam Payne's devastated father Geoff faces agonizing 10-day wait before he can take son's body home
BUEN AIRES, ARGENTINA: Geoff Payne, father of former 'One Direction' singer Liam Payne, has been told he may face a ten-day wait before he can take his son's body back to the UK.
Liam, 31, tragically died after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, and Argentinian authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, as reported by The Daily Mail.
Liam Payne’s father faces lengthy wait for son's body
Geoff Payne, 66, traveled to Buenos Aires last week to identify his son's body and meet with the Argentine Ministry of Justice. He also visited the CasaSur Palermo Hotel, where the incident occurred, to pay respects to his son’s fans who had set up a tribute vigil.
According to officials, a post-mortem revealed that Liam died from multiple injuries consistent with a fall from a 45-foot height. However, the case remains open pending the results of toxicology and forensic examinations.
Prosecutor Andres Esteban Madrea, who is leading the investigation, informed Geoff that it could take up to ten days for laboratory results to be processed, delaying the release of Liam’s body.
Despite the devastating news, Geoff Payne has vowed to remain in Argentina until he can bring his son's body home.
During their meeting, Prosecutor Madrea assured Payne that forensic analyses, including mobile phones and hotel security footage, were ongoing. Additionally, hotel staff are being questioned, and there are concerns that Liam may have been targeted by drug dealers despite having previously overcome substance abuse issues.
Madrea also provided Payne with police protection due to the high-profile circumstances surrounding his son's death.
In a statement, Argentina's Ministry of Justice said: "Andres Esteban Madrea, the head of the National Prosecutor's Office in Criminal and Correctional Matters No. 14, met yesterday with Geoff Payne, the father of British musician Liam James Payne, who was discovered deceased last Wednesday in a hotel in the Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires, to personally update him on the progress of the investigation."
Public outpouring of support for Liam Payne’s father amid long wait for body's repatriation
As the Payne family grapples with the tragic loss of former 'One Direction' star Liam Payne, heartfelt reactions continue to flood social media following the news that his father, Geoff Payne, may face a ten-day wait to repatriate his son’s body.
One commenter expressed deep empathy for Geoff, recalling their own experience, "My heart aches for his father having to wait that long to take his son back home. I remember when my sister brought my 29-year-old brother back home from another country. The pain I felt knowing he was in the cargo of the plane, alone, was incredibly hard. I wanted to protect him—though from what, I'm not sure."
Many users shared their thoughts on the heartbreaking ordeal, with one stating, “Every parent’s worst nightmare. While the timing is standard procedure, it must feel like a lifetime for Mr. Payne and his family. My heart goes out to them.”
Another user noted, "To lose a child must be unbearable, but to lose a child so publicly is unimaginable. I think Liam’s dad has behaved with immense dignity under these awful circumstances, especially with all eyes on him."
"Liam’s father is so strong, doing everything he can to support his family and bring Liam home. It’s heartbreaking for them to lose a son and brother," one user wrote.
"That poor man. I just want to hug him. He’s lost his only son. Please, anyone with substance abuse issues, get help and think about the suffering the families of addicts endure. It’s not worth it," a user said, while another added, "I am so glad Geoff is being supported by the authorities in Argentina. It is just so heartbreaking. Rest Easy Dear Liam."
