Liam Payne regretted and blamed 'frustrations' for making negative remarks about One Direction bandmates
BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA: At one point in his life, Liam Payne took out his own "frustrations" on his fellow One Direction bandmates by making negative comments about them
Nevertheless, he did realize his mistake and regretted making the unpleasant statements before his tragic death on Wednesday, October 16, reported People.
Payne, who turned 31 in August, fell off the balcony on the third floor of Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and succumbed to serious injuries from the fatal fall on the spot.
Liam Payne admitted his criticisms about One Direction bandmates were wrong
Besides Liam Payne, the English boy band One Direction, which was formed in 2010 in London, included Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson. After making a mark in the pop music field for half a decade, the group went on an indefinite hiatus in 2016.
The late singer was reportedly not always fond of his fellow bandmates.
Much to the One Direction fans' dismay, in a 2022 podcast interview with social media influencer Logan Paul, Payne made several outrageous statements about the band and the members.
After facing criticism, he issued an apology and later revealed that he was undergoing rehabilitation.
In July 2023, the 'Sunshine' singer admitted he had regrets about making negative remarks about Styles, Malik, Horan, and Tomlinson and blamed his "frustrations" for the past conduct.
"My own frustrations with my own career and where I kind of landed, I took shots at everybody else which is wrong," he said in a YouTube video. He expressed his apology for that, emphasizing that the statements "definitely" did not represent him.
"When I needed them most, they kind of came to my rescue," Payne added.
Liam Payne once said One Direction was a 'little bit toxic'
Speaking to Men's Heal Australia in 2019, Liam Payne revealed his coping method was his alcohol addiction. Though he voiced gratitude to the One Direction bandmates, he said it was a "little bit toxic."
"It's almost like putting the Disney costume on before you step up on stage, and underneath the Disney costume, I was pissed quite a lot of the time because there was no other way to get your head around what was going on," Payne said at the time.
"I mean, it was fun. We had an absolute blast, but there were certain parts of it where it just got a little bit toxic," he added.
In the 2022 'Impaulsive' podcast, he confessed despite his many reasons to "dislike" Malik, he would always be on the latter's side for "many reasons."
He noted his former bandmate's upbringing differed from his own, where he had "overly supportive" parents. Malik left One Direction in 2015, a year before the band split.
According to Payne, one could always paint a negative picture of the 'Pilowtalk' singer, however, he could not have the same perception after understanding what the latter went through to reach that point, irrespective of his desire to be there.
"I don’t agree with his actions, I can’t be on his side. I understand and hope that one day, the other person on the end of the phone wants to receive the help," Payne said.
Payne, survived by his parents, two sisters, and son Bear Grey, dropped his latest single 'Teardrops' in March.
