AUSTIN, TEXAS: Former Rep Liz Cheney gave a four-word message to Texas voters who were "discouraged" by the state's leadership embracing former president Donald Trump during an interview at the Texas Tribune Festival on Friday, September 6.

"Vote for Colin Allred," Cheney said when asked about her message, prompting her to declare her endorsement for the Democrat rival of Republican Sen Ted Cruz's Senate reelection bid, as per Newsweek.

Cheney, who represented Wyoming from 2017 to January 2023 and once a high-ranking GOP member, is an open critic of Trump.

Recently, she threw her endorsement behind the real estate mogul's opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, announcing her plan to vote for the Democratic presidential nominee in the presidential election.

Cheney also announced her father, Dick Cheney, would vote for Harris in November.

Ted Cruz hits back at Liz Cheney's endorsement for Colin Allred

Substantiating her decision to back Rep Allred, Cheney said, "You might not agree on every policy position, but we need people who are going to serve in good faith."

"We need people who are honorable public servants, and in this race that is Colin Allred, so I'll be working on his behalf," she added, as per Dallas Morning News.

Cruz, a Trump ally who endorsed the MAGA spearhead for president, called out the former Republican congresswoman, labeling her the "poster child of flip-flopping."

Cheney was part of the House Special Committee to investigate the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot that ultimately led to a DOJ probe against Trump over his alleged role in instigating the attack.

During her time on the January 6 committee, she lost the 2022 GOP primary for her re-election bid to Harriet Hageman, a Trump-endorsed candidate.

In a scathing response to Cheney's support for Allred, Cruz's campaign told Dallas Morning News that the Democrat would lose in November.

"Two years ago, the voters of Wyoming overwhelmingly rejected her, just like the voters of Texas will overwhelmingly reject Colin Allred this November. But hey, misery loves company."

The former congresswoman's father, who served as vice president during George W Bush's administration, mirrored her opinion that Trump would pose a "danger " to the Constitution if elected for a second term.

In a statement on September 6, he said, "In our nation's 248-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump."

The former Republican VP added that Trump "tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him. He can never be trusted with power again."

According to the latest polls by Decision Desk HQ and The Hill, Cruz is leading by more than 5 points percentage. The incumbent senator has 48.7% support, while his Democratic opponent stands at 43.3%.

Internet sides with Liz Cheney as she endorses Colin Allred

Netizens backed Liz Cheney as she declared her endorsement for Colin Allred, deeming it as the message for Texas voters disheartened by state leaders embracing Trump. Besides hailing her decision, some also took a swipe at Cruz.

"Ted Cruz is irrelevant and incompetent so she is absolutely right," a user wrote.

"I like the "free from the MAGA machine" Liz Cheney...I definitely take issue with her stance on policies but I will never question her patriotism and dedication to the Constitution Not just endorsing Harris-Walz, but giving her endorsement of @ColinAllredTX over Ted Cruz in TX," another remarked.

"She's... more committed to this than I'd expected. Good for her," added a third user.

"That is massive. She is one of the last standing true GOP and the establishment listens," read a fourth response.

"She knows that if Republicans are ever going to reclaim their party they must completely demolish MAGA. I'm OK with that. I want (at least) two healthy political parties in the US. I know Liz Cheney is not a Democrat and never will be. I support her efforts to reclaim her party," another user said.

"She gets it. She recognizes that the GOP’s problem isn’t just Donald. It’s him AND every cowardly legislator who has, by failing to lead and speak truth, enabled him for almost a decade. They all must be resoundingly defeated to reclaim a principled and truly conservative Party," someone else wrote.

"@SenTedCruz has gotten too comfortable in his extremist views and policies as well as thinking that he can never be voted out. It’s time to show him the door," read one response.

"She’s a true patriot. I may disagree with her on policies but I admire her courage commitment and dedication to the principles of our democracy and our constitutional republic," an individual chimed in.
