Loreen Feralo and Karen Casbohm: Ohio women drove dead man to bank for withdrawing $900 from his account
ASHTABULA, OHIO: Two Ohio women who reportedly drove an elderly man to a bank to withdraw money from his account have now been slapped with charges related to gross abuse of a corpse.
The defendants, Loreen Feralo and Karen Casbohm, allegedly drove the lifeless body of an 80-year-old man, later identified as Douglas Layman, to a bank before dropping him off at Ashtabula County Medical Center on Monday, March 4, as per Police Chief Robert Stell.
The accused duo lived with the victim in his home in Ashtabula, a city about 50 miles from Cleveland.
Loreen Feralo and Karen Casbohm 'just left' Douglas Layman in hospital without offering any information
The accused women did not initially give the hospital information on Layman. “They left without providing any information to the hospital. They just left him,” Chief Stell said.
According to the authorities, one of them eventually called the medical center with his information after a few hours. The hospital then got in touch with law enforcement shortly after 5 pm local time.
Feralo and Casbohm were then interviewed by authorities and charged with theft and gross abuse of a corpse, as they were arraigned in Ashtabula Municipal Court.
How were the women able to withdraw the money?
Feralo and Casbohm found Layman dead in their home earlier in the day as they were living there with him, before allegedly placing him in the front seat of his car with the help of a third person, as per the Ashtabula Police Department.
Police alleged the two women placed Layman's corpse in the car “in such a manner that he would be visible to bank staff in order to make the withdrawal." They then took out “an undisclosed amount of money from his account."
Ashtabula County Prosecuting Attorney Cecilia Cooper termed the situation "very unusual," and revealed that the women withdrew around $900.
It is worth noting that the bank had let the women take out money from Layman's account before, as long as he was in the vehicle with them as per Fox 8.
Police also reported that Feralo and Casbohm were not related to the deceased. The prosecutors said the suspects could face up to a year in prison.
The cause of Layman's death has not yet been revealed, and the Ashtabula Police Department is asking anyone with information to get in contact with them.
